We’re reimagining car insurance—and we’re looking for a senior backend engineer to help lead the charge. As a part of our Telematics team, you’ll take a leading role in shaping the platform behind Lemonade Car. You'll design and build systems that turn raw sensor data into real-time insights, smarter pricing, and safer driving experiences, making an immediate, real-world impact.

We believe three things matter for every role at Lemonade: drive to push through challenges, efficiency that keeps standards high while moving fast, and adaptability that lets you pivot with data and AI insights. These aren't buzzwords, they're how we actually work.

Our AI-first approach isn't just a tagline either. We're building the future of insurance with AI at the center, and we need people who are genuinely excited to learn and grow alongside these tools.

In this role you’ll
  • Own platform end to end: Lead the design, implementation, and evolution of our sensor-agnostic telematics platform, with focus on scalability, performance, and quality.

  • Build big: Design, implement and optimize our telematics data pipelines processing vast volumes of customer data from various sources such as mobile phones, plug-in tracking devices, or connected cars.

  • Solve hard problems: Partner with teams across the company to tackle complex challenges like pricing fairness, fraud prevention, and risk mitigation.

  • Integrate at scale: Work with car makers (OEMs), driving data vendors and fulfillment providers to deliver a seamless, delightful experience to our customers.

  • Unlock the data: Model and expose telematics data for a wide range of use cases – from real-time decision making to data science and analytics.

  • Ship modern infrastructure: Build microservices in TypeScript (NestJS), running on Kubernetes, in a cloud-native environment.

  • Move fast with great tooling: Use our in-house DevX and AI tools to streamline everything from design to development, deploying, and running services in production.

  • Lead by example: Mentor and coach fellow engineers, raising the bar for technical excellence across the company.

What you’ll need
  • 7+ years of backend engineering experience, building production systems at scale.

  • BSc in Computer Science (or equivalent experience)

  • Deep knowledge of modern backend frameworks, tools, and architecture

  • Proven experience building high-throughput, real-time data streaming systems, using Kafka, SQS, or similar technologies

  • Experience with AWS or other public cloud providers

  • Familiarity with data engineering and orchestration tools (Athena, Kinesis, Glue, Airflow)

  • Bonus points for experience in telematics, IoT, or sensor-driven platforms, as well as meaningful contributions to open-source projects

  • Ready to work in an office environment most days of the week
