Our client is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people discover, preserve, and share their family history. They provide one of the world’s largest and most trusted genealogy platforms, used by millions of people globally to connect across generations through records, data, and storytelling. They are expanding their engineering team to enhance machine learning capabilities in production, creating intelligent, reliable, and impactful features that help users interact with vast amounts of information in meaningful ways.

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join the team, with a focus on bridging backend software engineering and applied machine learning. In this role, you’ll build and maintain backend systems that operationalize ML models, collaborate with ML engineers to adapt pre-trained models, and ensure intelligent features run reliably in production environments. You’ll design APIs and backend services, automate deployment workflows, and monitor production performance to ensure models are robust, scalable, and efficient.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build and maintain scalable backend systems that power ML-driven features.

  • Collaborate with ML engineers and data scientists to fine-tune and adapt pre-trained models.

  • Design APIs and backend services that expose ML functionality to client applications.

  • Automate deployment workflows with CI/CD, versioning, and reproducibility.

  • Monitor production performance of models and implement rollback/retraining as needed.

  • Ensure systems are performant, secure, and meet reliability and latency goals.

What You Need to Succeed in This Role
  • 7+ years of experience in backend software development (Python, Go, or Java).

  • Experience integrating/customizing ML models with PyTorch, TensorFlow, or Hugging Face.

  • Strong understanding of REST APIs and service-oriented architectures.

  • Proven experience deploying ML models into production environments.

  • Proficiency with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Hands-on experience with model fine-tuning.

  • Familiarity with MLOps tools for deployment and monitoring.

  • Exposure to A/B testing, model performance monitoring, and observability.

  • Experience with streaming data platforms (Kafka, Pub/Sub).
