Department Overview

The IT Operations & Infrastructure team designs, delivers, and maintains scalable, secure, and modern cloud platforms that underpin the firm’s digital services. Operating across the UK and Warsaw, the team drives cloud transformation, automation, and DevOps adoption across Dentons UK and Middle East LLP.

Role purpose

The Senior Azure DevOps Engineer will support the design, implementation, and optimisation of cloud infrastructure and deployment pipelines on Microsoft Azure, playing a key role in the firm’s cloud migration and technology modernisation strategy.

This is a senior, hands-on engineering role for someone who can combine deep technical expertise with leadership - guiding teams through transformation, embedding DevOps practices, and helping the organisation fully leverage the benefits of cloud-native technology.

Accountabilities and Responsibilities

Cloud Architecture, Migration & Modernisation

  • Working with the wider team, plan and deliver the migration of applications and services from on-premises or legacy environments into Azure, ensuring secure, scalable, and efficient architectures.
  • Design and implement Azure-based infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) primarily with Terraform.
  • Partner with architecture and development teams to evolve existing platforms toward cloud-native patterns and DevOps maturity.
  • Optimise infrastructure for performance, scalability, cost efficiency, and operational resilience.

CI/CD and Automation

  • Build and maintain automated CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or similar tools.
  • Automate cloud provisioning, configuration, and deployment processes across multiple environments.
  • Embed testing, security validation, and compliance checks within delivery pipelines.
  • Continuously improving release processes, reducing deployment time and increasing reliability.

Security, Networking & Monitoring

  • Design and manage secure, high-performance cloud networking — including VNets, NSGs, VPNs, firewalls, ExpressRoute, and Azure AD.
  • Implement monitoring, observability, and logging using Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and Application Insights.
  • Enforce governance and security standards across environments in line with industry best practice.

Leadership & Team Enablement

  • Act as a technical leader within the Cloud and Infrastructure team, setting direction for cloud engineering standards, tooling, and processes.
  • Mentor and guide engineers and developers, helping them adopt modern DevOps practices and understand cloud principles.
  • Lead by example — demonstrating how to architect and implement solutions that are both technically robust and aligned with business goals.
  • Foster collaboration between infrastructure, security, and development teams to build a shared DevOps culture.
  • Contribute to strategic planning for cloud migration roadmaps and modernisation projects, providing technical insight and leadership throughout execution.

Requirements

Technical Skills

  • Proven experience designing, building, and supporting Microsoft Azure infrastructure (compute, storage, networking, and security).
  • Strong expertise in Terraform and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices.
  • Hands-on experience with application and data migrations to Azure.
  • Proficiency in scripting/programming languages such as PowerShell, Python, Bash, or C#.
  • Solid understanding of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, VPN, routing, load balancing, firewalls).
  • Demonstrated ability to design and manage CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps or equivalent tools.
  • Experience with containerisation and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, AKS).
  • Familiarity with monitoring and alerting frameworks in cloud environments.
  • Understanding of cloud governance, cost management, and compliance frameworks.

Leadership & Personal Attributes

  • Experience leading or mentoring technical teams through cloud migration or DevOps transformation.
  • Strong communicator who can influence, guide, and bring others on the journey of change.
  • Skilled at bridging technical and business priorities; able to articulate value and trade-offs clearly.
  • Collaborative mindset — thrives on cross-functional teamwork and knowledge sharing.
  • Analytical and pragmatic problem solver, comfortable navigating ambiguity in complex environments.
  • Proactive, adaptable, and outcome-focused, with a passion for modern engineering practices.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Microsoft Certified: AZ-400 (DevOps Engineer Expert) and/or AZ-305 (Solutions Architect Expert).
  • Proven experience leading enterprise-scale cloud migration projects.
  • Familiarity with hybrid and multi-cloud environments.
  • Experience with serverless and event-driven architectures.
  • Knowledge of cloud cost optimisation and performance tuning techniques.
