The Senior Accountant will be accountable for the financial performance of a large portfolio of federal, state and local grants. This work will be done in partnership with the grants administration team, program staff and other finance team members, and will be supported by at least one staff grant accountant. The Senior Accountant will participate in budget and financial reviews with program leaders to support strong decision-making based on data analysis. They will perform and oversee complex accounting tasks, including preparation of financial and grant reports, recording and adjustment of accounting transactions, and ensuring compliance with GAAP and federal regulations. Finally, the Senior Accountant will work collaboratively with other team members to strengthen policies, processes and systems for continuous improvement.

A successful Senior Accountant will leverage deep technical expertise, strong communication and organizational skills, and a collaborative orientation to closely monitor grant spending and collection. They will work in close partnership with finance staff and leaders across the organization to develop strategies that maximize funding opportunities in pursuit of greater outcomes for the people we serve.

Essential Job Duties

  • Manage portfolio of grants with full responsibility for compliance, invoicing, and cash collection.
  • Partner with grants administration to write grant budgets and strategically allocate resources.
  • Directly manage at least one staff accountant and collaborate with the grants team to ensure all supporting staff are trained and effectively utilized.
  • Support annual budget and forecast processes, focused on grant revenue and related program expenditures.
  • Conduct variance analysis to compare grant and program-specific financial results against budget, identifying key drivers of variances and providing explanations to operations and Grants Management team members.
  • Participate in month-end and year-end closing activities, ensuring adherence to deadlines and accuracy of financial data.
  • Support external audits and grant site visits by providing documentation, responding to auditor inquiries, and ensuring compliance with audit requirements and regulations.
  • Develop and maintain expertise in federal grant requirements and financial reporting.
  • Collaborate with grants administration, finance and other stakeholders to identify and implement process improvements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

Required and preferred knowledge and experiences to succeed.  

  • Education:
    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
    • CPA (Certified Public Accountant) preferred.
  • Work Experience:
    • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in accounting roles, preferably in not-for-profit setting.
    • 1+ years managing direct reports.
  • Technical Experience:
    • At least 2-3 years of federal grant management experience highly preferred.
    • Proficiency in accounting software and financial systems, as well as Microsoft Excel for data analysis and reporting.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Meticulous attention to detail in reviewing financial records, performing reconciliations, and preparing financial reports with accuracy.
    • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, for effectively conveying financial information to stakeholders and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
    • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to analyze financial data, identify trends, and draw meaningful insights for decision-making.
    • Effective problem-solving skills to address complex accounting issues, reconcile discrepancies, and implement solutions.
    • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities, deadlines, and business needs in a fast-paced environment.
    • Collaborative approach to working with colleagues, departmental leaders, and external partners to achieve common goals and objectives.
    • High ethical standards and integrity in handling financial information, adhering to professional codes of conduct and organizational policies.
    • Efficient time management skills to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Commitment to continuous learning and professional development in accounting principles, regulations, and best practices.
  • Additional Preferred Qualifications
    • HIV experience in a not-for-profit environment

Salary 

Starting at $80,000 - $88,000/annually (Depending on Experience)

The final salary will be determined based on factors such as market data, internal equity, candidate experience and qualifications. Please note that it is uncommon for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range.
