This role leads practice-specific research initiatives, managing teams and strategic partnerships, while mentoring staff and promoting innovation in research and design.
Overview:
Collaborates with HKS practice leadership to define and execute practice-specific research initiatives that align with strategic goals while addressing critical industry issues. Leads research projects from planning to delivery, managing teams, developing thought leadership, and managing strategic partnerships. Demonstrates strong leadership and mentorship skills, while promoting innovation across research and design practices. Manages the firm’s resources effectively and embodies the firm’s values and mission.Responsibilities:
- Leads the design and conducts research programs and studies related to architectural design firmwide and across practices
- Leads research and design teams in to collect, analyze, synthesize, and translate data into actionable insights
- Conducts initial development of leading-edge tools for potential testing with the practices
- Manages strategic research partnerships with agencies, industries and academic institutions
- Coordinates and leads activities for multiple projects, including budget, labor, and resources to ensure study scope compliance
- Prepares and submits accurate grant (internal and external) applications, including budget development
- Leads the development of research collateral for deliverables, presentations, workshops, and business development efforts
- Represents the firm through publications and presentations of research studies designed to influence market awareness and sentiment
- Collaborates with HKS practice leadership to define research topics aligned with firmwide strategic initiatives and industry challenges
- Leads submission and maintenance of Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols as needed
- Mentors junior team members and fosters a culture of innovation
- Participates in and may lead team meetings to discuss project issues, design and technical issues and coordination with other disciplines
Qualifications:
- PhD degree (or equivalent subject matter expertise) in a design, social science or other relevant field
- Typically 10+ years of working experience in research and publication
- Relevant accreditations preferred
- Advanced proficiency in the following skills preferred: research methodology, quantitative and qualitative data analysis, physical and digital prototyping, academic and industry writing
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite
- Proficiency in statistical software packages and Adobe Suite preferred
- Experience with research grant submissions and financial management
- Experience with AEC industry workflows and processes
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
- Strong graphic, visualization and representation skills to communicate design ideas
- Strong communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to build and maintain client relationships
- Ability to problem solve and apply innovative solutions
- Ability to collaborate and mentor in a team environment
- Travel may be required
