The Research Associate manages data requests, analyzes large datasets, builds Power BI dashboards, and supports organizational research to enhance impact.
iMentor, a 25-year-old national nonprofit dedicated to underserved high school students’ pursuit of college access and career success, prioritizes learning and innovation through data collection and analysis at every step in our model. We seek a Research Associate for our Organizational Learning and Impact (OLI) team, reporting to our Senior Data Analyst, to be a key player in collecting, organizing and analyzing data to inform our critical work moving forward. This job can be done remotely based anywhere in the United States.
Data Requests & Reporting (50%)
- Manage and respond to data requests submitted through OLI’s ticketing system.
- Pull, clean, and deliver data from multiple sources (e.g., PostgreSQL, survey platforms, internal dashboards) to support fundraising, organizational learning, and program implementation.
- Ensure outputs are accessible and clear to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Work cross-functionally with other teams to clarify data needs, share findings, and ensure consistent usage of metrics.
Reusable Data Products (20%)
- Assist in building dashboards and reports in PowerBI to track program metrics for internal teams, following a process that includes gathering stakeholder feedback and reviews.
- Maintain specific dashboards in PowerBI.
- Provide support to internal teams on use of specific dashboards.
Data Systems & Automation (15%)
- Write and maintain scripts and queries to automate data cleaning and manipulation.
- Document processes, ensuring reproducibility and sustainability.
- Work closely with OLI’s Data Modeling and Integration Lead to ensure quality of work products.
Organizational Research (15%)
- Support the design of studies and analyses to further iMentor’s impact and reach, e.g., research about factors contributing to strong pair relationships or effective pair support.
- Contribute to data collection, cleaning, analyses, and reporting for such research projects.
Qualifications
- 1–3 years of experience creating, cleaning, merging, managing, and analyzing large quantitative data sets, ideally in an education or nonprofit setting.
- Bachelor’s Degree required. Advanced degree in education, social science research, statistics, evaluation, economics, or related field preferred.
- Proficiency with R (or similar statistical programming languages) and Excel for data cleaning, data analysis, and workflow automation.
- Proficiency with SQL (PostgreSQL) for querying, joining, and cleaning datasets.
- Some experience in Power BI (or equivalent BI tools) for building dashboards and reports.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver accurate, high-quality work on deadline, with strong attention to detail and skill in managing multiple requests simultaneously.
- Strong communication and listening skills – supporting collaboration with a variety of stakeholders on data and research needs to advance organizational goals.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary $62,000 to $65,000 annually commensurate with experience.
