Job Summary & Responsibilities

We expect this reporter to go well beyond the press releases, news conferences and obvious stories to break news and explore the big-picture trends impacting the business community in the Denver area — positively and negatively. 

  • Contribute both short- and long-form stories to our news products online and in print.
  • Own the beat, dictating day-to-day coverage and thriving on digging out source-driven exclusives.
  • Relentlessly develop sources and manage relationships with high-level executives and other community leaders.
  • Scoop competitors on every story of any significance, not only telling them what happened, but why and how.
  • Use networking events, social media platforms and other community-building outlets to expand and fortify a source base and audience.
  • Attend newsgathering activities, interview opportunities and events in the community as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with other newsroom staffers to maximize the impact and accessibility of stories reported.
  • Meet or exceed goals related to audience engagement.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Five or more years of reporting experience.
  • Proven experience building and maintaining an active audience and a strong source base.
  • Solid understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure.
  • Knowledge of business principles is essential.
  • Proven excellence in reporting and writing, balancing daily and long-term assignments. 
  • Desire and ability to break news and to identify newsworthy events and sources.
  • Strong analytical and investigative interviewing skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to relate comfortably to a wide range of people, in person, on the phone and online.
  • Motivation to develop sources and build an audience.
  • Ability to leverage relationships with sources to deliver content that differentiates the organization from competitors.
  • Denver community experience is a plus.
  • Comfort with on-stage or on-camera presentations is helpful.
