Company Overview
Red 6 is an innovative Augmented Reality (AR) technology startup leading the way in synthetic air combat training. Our primary technology, supporting our ATARS product, enables pilots to simulate the cognitive challenges of flying while accessing realistic, scalable training in dynamic outdoor environments.
As a Reliability Engineer, you will own the reliability strategy and execution for Red 6’s HMD (EVE) and supporting electronics, from early design through production and fleet sustainment. You’ll partner with optical, electrical, firmware, systems, test/flight‑test, manufacturing, and supply‑chain teams to set targets, design‑in reliability, qualify the product to aerospace‑grade environments, and drive continuous reliability growth.
What You’ll Do
Define the reliability program for the HMD and electronics: requirements allocation, reliability plans, test strategies, qualification matrices, and acceptance criteria.
Lead DfR activities (component derating, parts selection, thermal & stress analysis, worst‑case analysis) and run DFMEAs/PFMEAs, FTA, RBDs, and reliability predictions (e.g., MIL‑HDBK‑217, Telcordia) as appropriate.
Plan and execute testing across development and production: HALT/HASS, ESS, accelerated life testing (e.g., Arrhenius/Coffin‑Manson methods), and environmental/EMI compliance testing aligned to aerospace norms (e.g., MIL‑STD‑810, DO‑160, MIL‑STD‑461) in collaboration with internal and external labs.
Establish and run FRACAS: instrument data collection, classify failures, drive root cause (8D/5‑Why), and close the loop with corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
Analyze reliability data (Weibull/parametric life data, growth modeling like Duane/AMSAA) and build dashboards to track MTBF/FIT, reliability growth, and field return trends.
Partner with flight‑test and field teams to plan test coverage, instrument prototypes, and translate real‑world usage into reliability loads and duty cycles for the HMD system.
Supplier & manufacturing engagement: define reliability requirements for critical components (microdisplays, emitters/LEDs/lasers, image sensors, IMUs, power electronics, connectors/harness, optics assemblies/adhesives); review supplier evidence (screening, burn‑in, PPAP/AS9145 artifacts), and guide incoming/ESS strategies.
Quality system alignment: ensure deliverables and records integrate cleanly with an ISO 9001 / AS9100D quality management system.
Requirements
Bachelors Degree or higher in Electrical, Mechanical, Systems, Physics, Reliability, or related field.
5+ years in reliability engineering for complex electro‑optical, wearable, or avionics/defense hardware (or 3+ with a relevant MS).
Hands‑on experience with DfR, FMEA/FTA/RBD, reliability predictions, HALT/HASS/ESS, and FRACAS.
Working knowledge of environmental and EMI/EMC test frameworks (e.g., MIL‑STD‑810, DO‑160, MIL‑STD‑461) and accelerated testing/statistical life‑data analysis.
Proficiency with reliability/statistics tools (e.g., ReliaSoft Weibull++/BlockSim, Minitab, JMP) and practical scripting/analysis to automate data pipelines.
Ability to read electrical/optical/mechanical drawings and collaborate across disciplines; strong, concise technical writing and presentation skills.
Comfort working on‑site with prototypes, test fixtures, chambers, and in close contact with manufacturing and suppliers.
Bonus Points
Experience with AR/VR/HMD hardware, micro‑display technologies (OLED/LCOS/DLP), high‑brightness emitters, optical adhesives & alignment, and thermal management in compact wearables.
Prior work qualifying flight equipment or line‑replaceable units; field/flight‑test exposure; reliability growth planning for rapid prototype‑to‑flight programs.
Knowledge of AS9145/APQP/PPAP, IPC‑A‑610/IPC‑9701, and ESD/handling controls.
