Mattermost is seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative Release Engineer to drive the reliability, quality, and efficiency of our software release processes. As part of our globally distributed Engineering team, you will work closely with development, QA, operations, and security teams to design, implement, and maintain robust release pipelines for our on-premise and SaaS offerings. You will play a critical role in ensuring that software changes are built, tested, packaged, and delivered to customers with high confidence and minimal friction. 

This role blends technical expertise in build and deployment automation with a passion for process optimization, tooling improvements, and cross-team coordination. You will help shape and enforce best practices around release processes, CI/CD pipelines, and artifact maintenance to maintain consistent, high-quality releases across multiple target environments.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Design, maintain, and improve build, packaging, and deployment pipelines for product releases 
  • Collaborate with engineering, QA, and operations teams to define and enforce release management processes, schedules, and quality gates 
  • Ensure reproducible builds and artifacts through well-defined versioning, branching, and tagging strategies 
  • Develop and maintain tooling to automate release workflows, including test automation, packaging, and artifact distribution. 
  • Monitor and optimize CI/CD performance, ensuring fast feedback loops and reliable automation 
  • Partner with security and compliance teams to ensure releases meet regulatory and security requirements 
  • Perform root-cause analysis of release-related issues and implement preventive measures 
  • Continuously evaluate and adopt new tools and technologies to improve release engineering efficiency and reliability 

 Requirements:

  • BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience, plus 3+ years of relevant experience in release engineering, 
    build and deployment automation, CI/CD pipeline management, or related software engineering functions.
  • Strong understanding of software release engineering principles 
  • Strong understanding of CI/CD systems, and deployment automation 
  • Proficiency in at least one programming/scripting language (e.g., Go, Python, Bash, or JavaScript). 
  • Experience with modern build systems, artifact repositories, and containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes). 
  • Hands-on experience managing source control systems (e.g. Github, Gitlab) 
  • Strong problem-solving skills with an ability to debug and resolve build, packaging, or deployment issues quickly 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for working in a distributed, async-first environment 
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across multiple teams and time zones 
  • For candidates residing in the U.S.: This role may require the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance in the future. As such, U.S. applicants must be U.S. citizens and eligible under applicable clearance requirements.  
  • Applicants must meet eligibility requirements for access to export-controlled information as defined by U.S. export control laws, including EAR and ITAR. 

 Preferences:

  • Familiarity with monitoring, logging, and metrics for release pipelines. 
  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible, Helm) 
  • Experience working in highly regulated environments (e.g., Department of Defense) and familiarity with applicable compliance/security standards (e.g., DISA STIGs, FedRAMP). 
  • Experience with release automation in cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure) 
  • Understanding of secure software supply chain practices (e.g., signing, SBOMs, vulnerability scanning) 
  • Contributions to open source projects or experience working in open source communities 

Mattermost takes a market-based approach to pay and pay may vary depending on your location. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.

 

Salary Range
$130,000$180,000 USD
