R&D Engineer I
Summary/Objective
Forge Nano Inc, is a fast growing materials company with a focus on manufacturing nano-scale coatings across a wide range of markets. The R&D team, responsible for internal and customer driven materials research and development, as well as equipment demonstrations, is seeking a talented entry-level process engineer to work with laboratory-scale equipment for powder processing. This position covers a broad range of duties including materials processing, instrumentation assembly and upkeep, instrumentation and materials development and general laboratory management. This is an on-site, hands-on job in a collaborative laboratory environment.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
Use scientific and engineering principles to process new and existing coating chemistries, composite materials and products. This activity requires executing process runs or discovery experiments in accordance with established experimental plans.
- Execute thin film coating experiments using atomic layer deposition (ALD) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) equipment to create new composite materials. Help plan and develop new processes for applying coatings to powders and objects involving low vacuum processing, bench top chemistry, powder handling, glove box work, and testing of new equipment.
- Perform tasks relating to assembly and maintenance of vacuum systems and thin film equipment. Learn how essential process equipment functions and complete tasks including materials production, equipment testing, and equipment maintenance.
- Work collaboratively with scientists, other process engineers and technicians to perform experimental planning, execution, and reporting tasks.
- Keep a neat and orderly record of all work done. Maintain data and records as necessary to support patent applications for innovative products.
- Create/edit/maintain necessary documentation for procedures, processes, and best-known-methods including work instructions, standard operating procedures, and process documentation & recipes.
- Maintain a safe work environment and staying OSHA compliant with relevant safety training.
Required Education and Experience
- AS or BS in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials, or related science/engineering fields.
- 2+ years hand-on/laboratory experience

- Powder handling experience
- Semiconductor Fab experience
- Experience with vacuum equipment, glove box operation, thin-film deposition & coatings; CVD and/or ALD are a plus.
- Experience in an industrial company that conducted materials development and advanced materials manufacturing.
- Proficiency with hand and power tools.
Work Environment
Work is carried out in a research and development laboratory. While performing the duties of this job, the employee handles hazardous chemicals and powders in the laboratory. The employee will be required to wear all appropriate safety equipment including but not limited to eye protection, respiratory protection, gloves, steel toe shoes, and lab coat. Laboratory work is required. An employee in this position works in an environment in which safety, environmental and health concerns may demand constant attention. Strict adherence to corporate and/or plant policies, rules and regulations in these areas is required.

The employee occasionally will work near moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is moderate. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms; and occasionally may lift up to 40 lbs.
Travel
No travel is expected for this position.
Compensation/Benefits
- $60,000 - $75,000 based on qualifications.
