Role Overview

Interns at Boom will have the opportunity to join an exciting aircraft startup focused on world-changing technology. Our interns work on real stuff - like coordinating with the propulsion, marketing, and policy teams to deliver the best possible versions of Overture and Symphony.

Our interns should be compelled to build innovative solutions, create new designs and collaborate with others. We are looking for passionate and talented aerospace and mechanical engineering students, one year from graduation (Bachelor or Masters degree). The ideal candidate will be excited about problem solving and be passionate about the future of supersonic aircraft design.

Responsibilities
We are looking for a driven and detail-oriented intern to support the optimization of our CFD and propulsion modeling workflows for Boom’s Symphony engine program. In this role, you will evaluate the current CFD high-performance computing (HPC) pipeline to identify inefficiencies and bottlenecks, and develop automation tools to streamline processes and improve overall efficiency. A key focus will be on enhancing computational resource utilization for better performance and scalability across simulation tasks.

In addition to workflow optimization, you'll run CFD validation cases for compressors or turbines, contributing to the accuracy and reliability of our simulation results. You’ll also support efforts to improve data accessibility by writing utilities that interface with cycle analysis tools, and help build and compare PyCycle and NPSS engine models. This is a hands-on opportunity to contribute to supersonic propulsion development while building real-world experience in simulation, automation, and engine performance modeling.

The Ideal Candidate

  • You see complex systems as puzzles waiting to be solved and thrive in environments where innovation meets precision.
  • One year away from graduation in a bachelor or master degree program in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, propulsion engineering or similar program.
  • Prior internship or hands-on project experience in aerospace, defense, or related high-tech industries.
  • Hands on manufacturing or prototyping experience
  • And one or more of the following:
  • Experience with coding or high-performance computing
  • Experience in mechanical design, CAD, and scripting
  • Experience in embedded systems or control system design

What Sets You Apart

  • Coursework or experience in one or more of the following: propulsion integration, aircraft design, aircraft structures, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, vehicle dynamics or aerodynamic performance analysis, electrical circuit design and simulation, wind tunnel experience (data collection, model Building etc.)
  • Familiarity with aircraft systems, including propulsion, controls and avionics, through coursework, personal projects, or prior internships.
  • Experience managing requirements for an aircraft development or production program.
  • Experience in a leadership role on at least one project, from concept to completion.
  • Flying experience
