About You


You’re a curious designer fascinated by the social component of games. You’re interested in how people connect and take joy in designing fun and healthy ways for them build relationships and feel like part of a global community.

You know how to balance engagement with simplicity in your design work using proven heuristics and user behavior insights as a guide. You sweat the details in UI design and take care to think about the impact of each pixel in your own work.

Above all, you have a passion for designing well-crafted, engaging product experiences that help users connect and have fun.


What you'll do

  • Partner closely with Product Designers, Product Managers, Engineers, Copywriters, and other stakeholders to help define requirements and build effective product experiences together
  • Craft polished, high-quality designs for our web and mobile platforms that follow Chess.com design patterns, make use of our design system, and keep players engaged
  • Design how players connect, socialize, and share with each other on key surfaces like Home, Profile, Friends, Chat, Leaderboards, and more
  • Present your design proposals and clearly articulate your decisions, backing them up with contextual rationale, heuristics, and user insights where possible
  • Create and iterate on prototypes to share and further explain your designs with other Designer, Engineers, and stakeholders
  • Own your projects from initial concept through to implementation and help ensure design-to-code alignment throughout the process
  • Be proactive about suggesting and designing meaningful improvements to our product to make it more fun, social, and consistent across platforms
  • Help uplift your design teammates and provide constructive design feedback


Preferred Skills

  • 2-3 years of experience working as a Product Designer on a consumer facing product or game
  • A portfolio of your best design work that demonstrates a clear understanding of interface and user experience design
  • Mastery of UI design fundamentals including typography, color, layout, visual hierarchy, alignment, contrast, and interactivity
  • A clear understanding and experience designing responsive and interactive user interfaces for mobile apps and the web
  • Experience working with an established design system
  • Familiarity with frontend development and how design translates into code
  • Experience using AI tools like Figma Make, Cursor, and Claude Code to build prototypes to share and quickly iterate on ideas
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills working in a remote, globally distributed team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills that allow you to document and explain your design decisions
  • A sense of ownership, pride, and responsibility for your craft


Bonus Points For

  • A love for the game of Chess and knowledge of our product
  • Experience designing social features for mobile games
  • Design engineering or frontend development experience on web, iOS, or Android
