Who we areAbout Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies—from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the team

Stripe’s Product Legal team is responsible for managing the legal and regulatory elements of our products and services. We work on some of the hardest technical, commercial, and regulatory problems around. In this role, you will be a key advisor to the Stripe teams who scope, build, and deliver Stripe products and services to our users. You will work on a diverse set of matters that straddle financial services, business, and technology.

What you’ll do

The ideal candidate is passionate about Stripe’s mission of helping businesses grow and thrives in solving complex legal, technology, and business issues in collaboration with others. We’re looking for someone who is a team player and willing to jump in on tasks of any size. Experience in financial technology, payments, and/or financial services is helpful, but not required, for you to be successful in this role.

Responsibilities
  • Counsel global Stripe teams operating at the intersection of technological innovation, e-commerce user experiences, and financial services compliance on a range of issues, including payments regulations (including for money transmission or stored value), bank and payment method scheme rules (e.g., card network rules), consumer protection, marketing, intellectual property, tax, and data privacy. The focus of this role will be on the development and commercialization of Stripe’s Merchant-of-Record solution and other innovative payments and risk products.
  • Stay up-to-date, with the support of Stripe’s legal subject matter experts, on U.S. and international laws and regulations dealing with the aforementioned topics.
  • Actively collaborate with a wide variety of Stripe teams (Compliance, Engineering, Partnerships, and Product) on a range of issues related to product development and commercialization, including advising on new and emerging legal and regulatory developments impacting products.
  • Draft and negotiate strategic agreements with financial partners and regulators that practically address legal, business, operational, and technical requirements.
  • Work closely with colleagues across Stripe’s global legal team to support Stripe's regulatory structure, its customer agreements, and strategic financial partnerships.
  • Help scope and build scalable and effective processes for legal review and launch of new products, industry verticals, and geographic expansion.
  • Participate as a proactive and strategic business partner to senior managers and be a trusted advisor.
  • Embrace learning and moving fast to help Stripe navigate a complex and heavily regulated payments environment.
Who you are

We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements
  • Minimum of 7+ years of experience as a qualified lawyer in a top law firm, in-house legal team, and/or government agency, preferably with experience counseling teams that solve issues through technology by translating complex legal requirements into clear and actionable advice that helps the business pursue their objectives.
  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Excellent project management skills and ability to work under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent judgment and is capable of making smart decisions with imperfect information.
Preferred qualifications
  • A passion for technology and ability to understand complex business models and product use cases quickly. Previous experiences related to digital products, privacy, and/or tax are a huge bonus.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit—a self-starter who thrives in a fast paced environment, deals well with ambiguity, and focuses on driving impact.
  • Team-oriented and low-ego mindset with a proven track record for working well across cross-functional teams.
