About the Opportunity

Contentful is an innovative, high-growth, customer-focused company in a large and growing market. This is a unique opportunity to join a growing legal team. As Contentful’s Legal Counsel Privacy you will advise and partner with our Engineering, Product, Security, Sales, Marketing, People, and other teams throughout the organization to manage legal risk and compliance with global privacy laws and regulations. On the privacy side, you will help develop and effectuate strategies and initiatives that focus on building a scalable privacy program. Success in this role requires a collaborative, services-oriented mentality, a willingness to embrace tactical details without missing strategic priorities, and skill in distilling complex legal concepts into simple, actionable business advice. This role will report directly to the VP & Deputy General Counsel PPIC (Product, Privacy, IP, Compliance). 

What to expect?

  • Provide analysis and guidance on privacy, security, AI and associated issues to ensure compliance with existing and emerging laws and implementation into business processes as needed
  • Draft and negotiate DPAs, security addendums, and other agreements with customers and suppliers
  • Develop and maintain data-related contract templates, such as DPAs and security addendums, as well as associated playbooks
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Product and other business partners at all stages of product development to identify privacy, AI and other risks and support the development of risk-mitigation processes and controls through privacy-by-design principles
  • Drive high-impact data protection projects with cross-functional stakeholders
  • Draft external privacy notices and disclosures, and manage/update internal policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable data protection laws
  • Respond to internal and external inquiries about individual data rights and Contentful’s processing activities
  • Support the Security team in investigating and responding to potential security incidents

What you need to be successful

  • 5+ years of legal practice with direct experience providing privacy-related advice to SaaS and/or other technology companies, product and IP experience desirable, but not required
  • Substantial experience drafting, editing and negotiating data protection related contracts (e.g., data privacy and security addendums)
  • Deep experience with data protection laws and regulations, particularly those governing the US and EU
  • Highly responsive, solution-oriented approach in working with stakeholders
  • Strong writing skills with an attention to detail and the ability to express complicated matters in easily understandable and effective ways
  • Excellent judgment, analytical rigor, and business pragmatism
  • Self-directed and takes ownership of tasks with the ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively
  • CIPP/E or CIPP/US certification

This role will need to be conducted in a state in which we are currently registered to do business. 

Colorado Salary Statement: The salary range displayed is specifically for those potential hires who will work or reside in the state of Colorado if selected for the role. Any offered salary is determined based on internal equity, internal salary ranges, market data/ranges, applicant's skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications (e.g. JD/technology), for example.

Colorado Salary Range: $206,000 - $229,000
[This position is eligible for equity awards in accordance with the terms of Contentful’s equity plans.]
