The Principal Salesforce Engineer will be part of establishing the engineering vision on our Salesforce Platform and how it aligns to serve our customers and financial advisors. This person brings passion, enthusiasm, and a growth mindset to Thrivent’s Engineering Culture. They are a trusted expert who applies business, industry, and technical knowledge to assigned assets, domains, platforms, technologies, and vendors. To be successful, this person will need to influence leaders as well as the engineering community. We are looking for engineers with a broad technology background. This will include deep engineering knowledge beyond Salesforce and across multiple domains like custom development, back-end development (Java), full stack (React), SaaS, and SOAP/REST API Integrations.
Position Summary:
The Principal Salesforce Engineer will have expertise in Financial Service, Sales, Service, Marketing Cloud functionality within the Salesforce Platform. Successful candidates will have experience with large implementations along with broad knowledge of Salesforce and externally integrated capabilities. Candidates will possess strong technical skills while emphasizing a user experience and design-first approach.
Position Roles / Responsibilities / Accountabilities:
Designing Solutions
- Apply expert industry knowledge and broad understanding of multiple disciplines with technical knowledge to drive outcomes for customers
- Creates the overall design /architecture for the team and articulates the components, interactions between the components /between product groups
- Ability to work and problem solve independently on initiatives that align to Thrivent’s Salesforce Platform strategies.
- Proficiency in data modeling, designing custom objects, fields, and relationships to meet end-user needs.
Designing and implementing custom user-guided experience workflows.
- Defining system solutions that ensure alignment with industry best practices, technical strategies, and priorities.
- Expertise in integrating Salesforce with external systems using APIs and middleware.
- Understanding various integration patterns, including point-to-point integrations, middleware-based integrations, and event-driven architectures.
Learning and Applying New Techniques
- Leads the initiative to research new techniques along with best practices and share it across the organization.
Coaching Engineers
- Provide guidance and reinforcement around established engineering best practices across product groups within the organization
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to other engineers on our Salesforce Platform
- Provide trainings and demos to address knowledge gaps across the teams and product groups
Collaborating Within the Team
- Participate in communities of practice and collaboration sessions to provide technical expertise to solve most complex and/or architecturally impactful problem/remove technical roadblocks for the team
- Participate in product planning and implementation. Helps product owner to create technical user stories as required/needed
- Technical leader in system design across multiple teams; Provides broad and/or deep expertise in collaborating across teams to create solutions that lead to outcomes
- Broker solution design and implementation across product teams to achieve outcomes for
the most critical technology and/or strategic priorities for the organization
Collaborating Across Teams
- Promote cross team adherence to Salesforce technology standards and target architecture.
- Technical leader in system design across multiple teams; Provides broad and/or deep expertise in collaborating across teams to create solutions that lead to outcomes.
- Broker solution design and implementation across product teams to achieve outcomes for
the most critical technology and/or strategic priorities for the organization
Collaborating Across the Organization
- Expert in design, developing, documenting and analyzing overall architecture of our Salesforce instances and integrated applications, including hardware and software. Work in collaboration with other product teams to provide technical expertise to engineers across the company.
- Creates design patterns for the enterprise and provides technology insights that guide the strategic technology vision for the organization.
- Provides the feedback loop from teams back to operations as new requirements for operationalizing products become necessary. May do this through PoCs or full implementations.
Setting Product/Platform Technology Strategy
- Define the high-level capabilities requirements for the product/ platform and collaborate
with the teams across the organization
- Provide platform technology expertise to teams within product group as well as
interdependent teams across the organization
Defining Engineering Standards/Patterns
- Partner with the engineering community inside and outside Thrivent in establishing best
- Define and share engineering standards across internal teams and collaborate to help
software engineers apply these patterns to build solutions that achieve outcomes
- Participates in external activities including open-source software contributions and meetups
DevOps
- Lead the resolution of critical incidents and provides technical leadership in proactively
addressing critical production issues/outages
- Able to assess and introduce technology to build more stable, scalable, and resilient
- Evaluate, recommend and execute new CI/CD components to make the products more
stable for a given area
- Build partnership across technical areas to influence when needed
Selecting and Managing Technology Vendors
- Consults on the evaluation process for software solutions - provides technical advice on
how solutions play into the larger strategy of our Salesforce product areas
- Contribute to criteria evaluation for selecting the right platforms and software for the
product team(s)
Recruiting and Building Talent
- Engage in the tech community to build the Thrivent technology brand and position as the employer of choice in the market.
- Contributes / helps in the recruitment process to hire the right engineering talent for the organization.

Position Qualifications:
- Highly proficient in developing Apex Classes, Apex triggers, Batch Apex, JavaScript, Lightning Web Components (LWC), Visual Force (VF Pages).
- Recent work experience in several of the following integration technologies: Java, REST/ SOAP API, Spring Boot, Mongo DB, Confluent Kafka, Change Data Capture, Platform Events, OpenShift, Docker, TC Server, Messaging Queues (RabbitMQ, IBM MQ).
- Experience with CI/CD DevOps including using tools such as Visual Studio Code, Salesforce CLI, Git, Github, Github actions, Bitbucket, and Jira.
- Exposure to working in a product operating model, leveraging an Agile scrum execution framework.
- Experience working directly with product managers, directors and leading business partners.
Required:
- Extensive knowledge of Financial Service, Sales, and Service Clouds and Marketing Clouds.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or other technical field or equivalent work experience
- 10+ years of experience in the Salesforce engineering environment, taking abstract concepts and ideas and formulating a detailed software engineering plan to deliver
- Advanced Salesforce Administrator and Developer certifications.
- Highly proficient in developing Apex Classes, Apex triggers, Batch Apex, JavaScript, Lightning Web Components (LWC), Visual Force (VF Pages).

The applicable salary or hourly wage range for this full-time role is $158,271.00 - $214,132.00 per year, which factors in various geographic regions. The base pay actually offered will be determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to, location, relevant experience, skills, and knowledge, business needs, market demand, and other factors Thrivent deems important.
