The Principal Cloud Database Engineer is a key enabler of the Healthfirst cloud and operational excellence strategy. This role manages enterprise solutions in both public and private clouds while also utilizing tools to automate system deployment and configuration management tasks. The incumbent may work collaboratively with other engineers and/or autonomously in creating solutions. He/she works with diverse technologies utilizing tools and automation to eliminate manual operations and create reliable and repeatable orchestration. The role is responsible for establishing standards of usage across our public and private cloud footprint. This role works with other engineers to identify efficiency opportunities, eliminate waste, and improve the resiliency of our infrastructure platforms, while working with application development teams to support continuous delivery of new capabilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Database Design and Implementation: Design, develop, and implement cloud-based database solutions in collaboration with development teams. Create database schemas, tables, and indexes to support efficient data storage and retrieval.
  • Cloud Database Administration: Manage, monitor, and optimize cloud database instances to ensure high availability, performance, and data integrity. Configure and maintain database backups, replication, and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Performance Tuning and Optimization: Identify and resolve database performance issues, including query optimization, index tuning, and resource utilization. Monitor database performance metrics and implement improvements to optimize performance.
  • Data Security and Compliance: Implement and maintain appropriate security measures and access controls to protect sensitive data stored in the cloud database. Ensure compliance with data protection regulations and industry best practices.
  • Database Monitoring and Troubleshooting: Monitor database activity and performance using database monitoring tools. Diagnose and resolve database-related issues and incidents, working closely with cross-functional teams to ensure timely resolution.
  • Database Capacity Planning: Estimate future database storage and performance requirements based on data growth projections. Plan and implement database capacity upgrades or scaling activities to accommodate evolving business needs.
  • Database Automation and Scripting: Develop and maintain database automation scripts, workflows, and configurations using scripting languages (e.g., SQL, Python) and infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Ansible). Implement DevOps practices for database deployment and management.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate with application teams, infrastructure teams, and stakeholders to understand database requirements, provide technical guidance, and ensure effective integration with other systems. Communicate database-related updates, issues, and recommendations to relevant stakeholders.
  • Continuous Learning and Adaptation: Stay updated with the latest trends, tools, and best practices in cloud database technologies. Continuously enhance technical skills and knowledge to adapt to evolving cloud environments and emerging database technologies.
  • Act as an escalation point for operations teams for incident and ticket resolution and participate in an on-call rotation as an escalation point.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.
  • Serve as a technical lead within Infrastructure & Operations as well as with Development teams in areas of cloud database technology and automation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience in designing, building, and managing Linux/Unix-based and Windows systems.
  • Extensive Cloud Experience within AWS, Azure, GCP, etc.
  • Expert working knowledge of Core Cloud Competencies (Virtualization, DNS, IAM, Access Control, Environment Management, etc.)
  • Proven scripting experience in at least one language (BASH, Python, PowerShell, etc.)
  • Extensive IaC experience with tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Cloud Formation, etc.
  • Record of accomplishment for identifying repeatable processes and partnering with teams to push innovation and automation.
  • Bachelor's degree or High School Diploma or GED with equivalent work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5-7 years of database development, engineering and administration experience.
  • 5-7 years of experience with any of the database management systems (Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL etc.).
  • 3-5 years’ experience with NoSQL database systems (Caching databases, DynamoDB, Neo4j, etc.).
  • 3 to 5 years of experience with cloud-based database technologies (Amazon AWS S3, RDS, Redshift, Aurora/Postgres etc.). 
  • Knowledge of cloud-based PaaS databases solutions (Microsoft Azure and/or Google Cloud database technologies is plus.
  • 1-3 years’ experience working with large database / large scale projects. Have knowledge of cloud computing concepts, virtualization, and infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) platforms.
  • Experience implementing Cloud Services with an Infrastructure as code methodology using Cloud formation, Ansible, or Terraform
  • Experience supporting Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD integration.
  • Expert understanding of cloud security best practices and implementing a least privileged model of access in AWS.
  • Deep troubleshooting skills that involve analysis of logs, network traces, configuration data, automation tools to resolve issues until end-to-end systems are functioning.
  • Experience working in regulated and/or high-security environments and industries (PCI, HIPAA, HITRUST, etc.).
  • Master's degree in computer technology field.

Hiring Range*:

  • Greater New York City Area (NY, NJ, CT residents): $131,900 - $190,570

  • All Other Locations (within approved locations): $117,400 - $174,675

As a candidate for this position, your salary and related elements of compensation will be contingent upon your work experience, education, licenses and certifications, and any other factors Healthfirst deems pertinent to the hiring decision.
