The Principal Backend Java Engineer will design and develop large-scale distributed systems, automate infrastructure management, mentor junior developers, and collaborate with teams to solve complex technical challenges.
Job Summary: We’re hiring a Principal Backend Java Engineer with a strong background in large scale distributed systems. You’ll work on one of the largest distributed systems in the world, running on thousands of machines and handling petabytes of data. You’ll be developing infrastructure and solving many technical challenges in the areas of distributed computing frameworks, data structures and algorithms. This team develops and maintains high-performing systems for thier 200 million plus active users. We develop technology that changes the internet while handling billions of inbound connections per day to manage trillions of messages requiring petabytes of efficient storage.
Work Location:
· If located near a Rackspace office, you’ll work a hybrid schedule… 2 days in the office and three days remote.
· If not located near an office, you may work 100% remotely.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop large-scale distributed systems that balance resources, constraints, requirements, and complexity
- Deploy, monitor and operate large scale production systems distributed across the globe
- Automate the provisioning, CI/CD pipelines, and management of our infrastructure
- Lead projects and mentor junior team members
- Participate in agile development with weekly sprints, planning & estimating work, daily standup, & retrospective
- Effectively collaborate with other engineers and cross-functional teams
- Recommend alternative approaches to solving complex problems and use new technology to achieve goals
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field of study with 10+ years of relevant industry experience / Master’s degree in Computer Science with 8+ years of relevant industry experience.
- 9+ years of Java experience.
- Must have experience working within a GCP environment.
- Strong experience in large-scale distributed systems.
- Experience with NoSQL and Key/Value data stores, e.g redis/MongoDB/Memcached.
- Experience with Kubernetes, connection tuning, performance tuning, optimization.
- Expertise in designing systems architecture, collaborating effectively with external partners, and managing relationships with key stakeholders.
- Familiarity with data mining, text processing, and classification algorithms.
- Experience in building distributed, low-cost, internet-scale streaming systems in Java, ideally on Linux.
- E2E software development lifecycle experience, including building and maintaining production-grade software.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Worked effectively in a remote setting, maintaining strong written and verbal communication skills.
- 5+ years of experience in customer-facing software/technology or consulting.
- Understanding of statistical methods and exploratory data analysis.

· The anticipated starting pay range for Colorado is: $143,700 - $210,760.
· The anticipated starting pay range for the states of Hawaii and New York (not including NYC) is: $153,000 - $224,400.
· The anticipated starting pay range for California, New York City and Washington is: $167,400 - $245,520.
Unless already included in the posted pay range and based on eligibility, the role may include variable compensation in the form of bonus, commissions, or other discretionary payments.
