Principal Backend Engineer

We're looking for a Principal Backend Software Engineer with deep TypeScript expertise and mastery of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) to lead the strategic evolution and scaling of Vidmob's platform. As a Principal Engineer, you'll drive technical vision, architect complex distributed systems, lead cross-functional initiatives, and mentor senior engineering talent while ensuring our backend infrastructure can support exponential growth.

Responsibilities

• Define and execute the strategic technical roadmap for backend systems, with expertise in TypeScript (using NestJS) within a service-oriented architecture (fluency with Java, Go, Python)

• Lead the architecture and design of highly scalable, resilient backend systems that support millions of creative assets and real-time analytics

• Design and maintain sophisticated APIs and integration patterns for product and analytics workflows at enterprise scale

• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to senior backend engineers, leading architecture reviews, design discussions, and technical decision-making

• Drive cross-functional initiatives spanning engineering, product, and data teams to deliver breakthrough capabilities

• Establish and enforce best practices for security, maintainability, observability (Datadog, OpenTelemetry), and operational excellence

• Lead technical decisions that impact the entire engineering organization and influence long-term architectural evolution

• Drive adoption of emerging technologies and patterns that enhance system performance and developer productivity

Requirements

• 10+ years of backend engineering experience with a proven track record of leading complex, large-scale distributed systems

• Expert-level proficiency in TypeScript/Node.js with deep understanding of performance optimization and enterprise patterns

• Extensive experience with NestJS or similar backend frameworks, with ability to architect and implement custom solutions

• Deep expertise in service-oriented architecture, microservices patterns, and distributed system design principles

• Proven experience architecting systems that leverage multiple database technologies:

  • NoSQL: MongoDB, Snowflake, BigQuery

  • Data Warehouses: Databricks

  • Relational: MySQL

• Advanced knowledge of cloud infrastructure (preferably AWS) including serverless architectures, container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes), and infrastructure as code

• Experience with advanced CI/CD patterns, API security frameworks, performance engineering, and chaos engineering

• Demonstrated leadership in mentoring senior engineers and driving technical growth across engineering teams

• History of making architectural decisions for systems handling millions of requests/day

• Experience in technical planning, estimation, and risk assessment for large-scale projects
