ABOUT THE ROLE
The Portfolio Director, Specialty Lending is responsible for strategic oversight, credit management, and portfolio quality of specialty lending relationships to include, but not limited to, litigation finance, private equity, middle market, and fintech lending sectors. As a key leader supporting the Head of Specialty Lending, this role ensures sound credit decisions and strong portfolio performance while contributing to the growth and development of the bank's specialty lending business.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Portfolio Management
- Originate, underwrite, manage, and monitor a diverse portfolio of specialty lending clients — to include, but not limited to, litigation finance, private equity, middle market, and fintech — to ensure ongoing credit quality and compliance with loan agreements.
- Conduct in-depth financial due diligence and credit analysis of borrowers, with specific attention to the unique risks and structures within specialty lending sectors.
- Lead the preparation of credit presentations and periodic reviews, ensuring consistent adherence to internal policies and regulatory standards.
- Partner with the Head of Specialty Lending, Relationship Managers, Risk, and Legal teams to structure new credit opportunities and renew existing facilities, including warehouse lines of credit, forward flow agreements, master participation agreements, and loan portfolio purchases.
- Manage timely execution of renewals, annual reviews, covenant testing, and borrowing base certificate reviews for all applicable loans within the portfolio.
Credit Oversight & Risk Management
- Serve as a key contributor to credit approval discussions, providing seasoned judgment on borrower risk, loan structures, and risk mitigants.
- Identify emerging risks within the portfolio and proactively recommend and implement corrective actions.
- Maintain awareness of regulatory changes, economic trends, and industry developments within specialty lending markets that may impact portfolio performance.
- Make recommendations with respect to risk grade for all loans within the respective portfolios.
- Provide updates to senior leadership with respect to delinquent loans and risk-graded loans for management and board reporting purposes.
Strategic Partnership & Reporting
- Collaborate closely with the Head of Specialty Lending to support strategic growth initiatives across specialty lending verticals.
- Prepare and present portfolio reports, trend analyses, and risk assessments to the Head of Specialty Lending and senior leadership.
- Contribute to the development and refinement of specialty lending policies, procedures, and risk management frameworks.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for specialty lending credit matters across the institution.
- Participate in community organizations, industry events, and professional development activities that positively position MVB in the market.
EDUCATION & WORK EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, Economics, or related field required; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in commercial credit or portfolio management, with at least 5 years focused on specialty lending, specialty finance, or investment banking.
- Prior leadership or team management experience strongly preferred.
- Deep understanding of credit risk, complex lending structures, and regulatory requirements related to specialty finance sectors.
- Proven ability to assess complex financial statements, cash flow models, and specialty finance transaction documents.
- Experience with litigation finance, private equity, middle market lending, or fintech preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including credit memo writing and executive-level presentations.
- Proficiency in financial modeling and credit analysis tools.
- Ability to work cross-functionally and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
- High level of integrity, professional judgment, and attention to detail.
- Formal credit training or certification (e.g., CFA, CCRA) is a plus.
