This role reports to the Associate Director of Payroll and ensures payroll accuracy, compliance, and efficiency while leading a team of payroll analysts. The Payroll Operations Manager will support audits and controls, and drive process improvements within a fast-paced, publicly traded organization.
What You'll Do:
- Manage full-cycle payroll processing for multi-state, weekly and biweekly pay groups.
- Lead all aspects of the accuracy and timeliness of wage payments, bonuses, commissions, and deductions.
- Review and approve payroll results, reconciliations, audits and funding reports prior to disbursement.
- Ensure accurate processing of new hires, terminations, transfers, and employee data changes through Workday and UKG integrations.
- Manage payroll adjustments, retros, off-cycle payments, and year-end activities.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local wage and hour laws, payroll tax regulations, and internal SOX controls.
- Maintain documentation of payroll policies, procedures, and audit trails.
- Support internal/external payroll audits, including documentation requests and remediation.
- Lead, train, and mentor payroll analysts to ensure accuracy, accountability, and professional development.
- Foster a collaborative, service-oriented team culture passionate about employee experience and compliance.
- Manage workload distribution, priorities, and performance goals for the payroll operations team.
- Identify and implement process improvements, automation, and system enhancements to increase efficiency and accuracy.
- Partner with HRIS, Finance, and Accounting to support system testing, upgrades, and data validation.
- Maintain payroll metrics and reporting dashboards to measure team performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Collaborate with HR, Finance, Legal, and external vendors to ensure alignment and consistency in payroll processes.
- Provide excellent customer service and issue resolutions for employees and business partners.
- Communicate effectively regarding payroll policies, deadlines, and changes.
What you'll need:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field preferred.
- 5+ years of progressive payroll experience, including 3+ years in a management or supervisory role.
- Experience managing multi-state payroll for large, complex organizations (10,000+ employees preferred).
- Strong working knowledge of Workday, UKG (Pro/Dimensions), and ADP (SmartCompliance).
- Demonstrated experience with SOX controls, compliance, and payroll audit support.
- In-depth knowledge of federal and state payroll regulations, tax requirements, and wage/hour laws.
- Outstanding attention to detail and accuracy under tight deadlines.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Analytical mindset with ability to interpret payroll data and identify trends.
- Proficiency in Excel and payroll reporting tools.
- CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) or FPC certification preferred.
- Environment: High-volume, multi-system environment in a public company setting with multiple entities.
