Serve as enterprise advisor and player-coach for Microsoft Fabric adoption: assess use-case fit, build standards and reusable assets, enable teams through coaching and workshops, lead complex proofs-of-concept and migrations, and partner with infrastructure and security to ensure governed, scalable analytics solutions.

Technology, Digital and Data
Job Description:
Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.
When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do - but also about each other. Job Summary:
As a MS Fabric Solution Specialist within Caterpillar's Intelligent Automation and Business Intelligence Center of Excellence (COE), you will be the enterprise's trusted advisor on Microsoft Fabric - helping business units decide when Fabric is the right platform, how to adopt it well, and why it fits (or doesn't fit) a given use case. This is a player-coach role: you set the standards, build the reusable patterns, and coach teams across the enterprise - and you roll up your sleeves on the most complex or strategic builds, migrations, and proofs of concept. Rather than delivering isolated analytics solutions, you raise the capability of every team you touch, ensuring a scalable, governed, and high-performing analytics ecosystem.

Rather than delivering isolated analytics solutions, you raise the capability of every team you touch, ensuring a scalable, governed, and high-performing analytics ecosystem.
What You Will Do:
Advise & Enable (the core of the role)
- Serve as the go-to advisor for Fabric adoption - run intake consultations with business units, assess use-case fit, and recommend the right approach (including steering teams away from Fabric when another platform is the better choice).
- Build decision frameworks and reference guidance: when to use Fabric vs. existing platforms, migration-readiness criteria, and cost/capacity trade-offs.
- Drive enablement through workshops, office hours, and an internal Fabric community of practice; define adoption maturity models and COE success metrics.
- Coach analytics, BI, and data engineering teams on best practices, lifting their capability rather than building for them.
Build & Set Standards (hands-on)
- Partner on complex/strategic use cases - performance tuning, troubleshooting, and proof-of-concept development - alongside the teams that own them.
- Develop and maintain reusable assets: templates, reference architectures, semantic-model patterns, data pipelines, and governance documentation for enterprise-wide modernization.
- Provide deep SME guidance on Fabric Lakehouse, Data Factory pipelines, Dataflows Gen2, notebooks, medallion architectures, and Power BI modeling/DAX/workspace design.
- Create monitoring approaches, standards, and operational practices that uplift data quality, platform health, and BI performance.
Partner & Align
- Work with central infrastructure, platform engineering, and cybersecurity to keep Fabric, Power BI, and related services secure, scalable, reliable, and well-governed.
- Align enterprise analytics strategy with Caterpillar's broader digital and data transformation roadmap.
- Support incident/problem management and communicate findings to business and technical stakeholders.
What You Will Have:
- Value Realization (Microsoft Fabric & BI Focus): Demonstrated ability to define, track, and deliver measurable business value through Microsoft Fabric and BI initiatives. Skilled in aligning Fabric workloads (e.g., Data Engineering, Data Warehouse, Power BI, Real-Time Analytics) to business cases, establishing KPIs, and leveraging tools such as Power BI dashboards, Fabric metrics, and data pipelines to monitor adoption, performance, and ROI.
- Communicating Complex Concepts (Business Requirements & BI Solutions): Strong ability to elicit and understand business requirements, translating stakeholder needs into effective Microsoft Fabric and BI solutions. Skilled in evaluating and articulating the trade-offs between different approaches (e.g., Power BI reports vs. paginated reports, Direct Lake vs. Import, Lakehouse vs. Warehouse) and clearly communicating why specific architectures or tools best align to business goals, data needs, performance expectations, and user experience. Adept at bridging business and technical teams by simplifying complex analytics concepts into actionable insights and solution recommendations.
- Azure & Microsoft Fabric Cloud Services: Strong knowledge of Azure cloud ecosystem and Microsoft Fabric platform, including OneLake, Data Factory pipelines, Synapse Data Engineering, and Power BI integration. Ability to design and implement scalable, secure, and cost-effective end-to-end analytics solutions leveraging Azure services (e.g., Azure Data Lake, Azure SQL) alongside Fabric capabilities.
- Data Modeling (Fabric, Power BI, & Analytics): Expertise in designing and implementing data models within Microsoft Fabric and Power BI, including dimensional modeling, semantic models, and star/snowflake schemas. Skilled in defining relationships across datasets, optimizing data for performance and documenting data flows, transformations, and business logic across pipelines
Considerations For Top Candidates:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
- Extensive experience in Business Intelligence, data engineering, or analytics platform roles, including demonstrated experience advising or enabling teams - not solely building solutions yourself.
- Proven ability to influence and coach cross-functional stakeholders and translate technical capabilities into clear, decision-ready guidance for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouse, Data Factory, Dataflows Gen2, Notebooks, Delta tables, semantic models) and strong Power BI fluency (modeling, DAX, dataset optimization, workspace management).
- Solid data engineering foundation: ingestion patterns, transformation logic, medallion architecture, and SQL.
- Sound judgment on platform fit - comfortable recommending the right tool for the job, even when it isn't Fabric.
- Experience creating reusable BI/data assets (templates, pipelines, semantic models, governance artifacts).
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills across distributed systems, BI tools, and pipelines.
- Experience enabling or governing analytics in a Center of Excellence or enterprise technology function.
- Knowledge of enterprise BI platforms such as Tableau, Cognos, ThoughtSpot, or Business Objects (to advise on platform selection and migration).
- Familiarity with Git integration, CI/CD, and DevOps approaches for Fabric and Power BI.
- Familiarity with Azure data services (Data Lake, Azure SQL, Functions, Synapse).
- Understanding of data warehousing, dimensional modeling, and ETL/ELT practices.
- Familiarity with platform monitoring, capacity planning, or gateway management in a large enterprise.
- Experience scripting/automating with Python, PowerShell, or SQL.

- The ideal location for this role is East Peoria - IL, Nashville - TN, Dallas - TX
