Who we are:

Electra is reinventing ironmaking from the ground up with a breakthrough electrochemical technology that produces high purity clean iron and critical co-minerals. With two operating pilots in Boulder and a new demonstration facility underway in Jefferson County, we’re on track to reach commercial scale by the end of the decade. Backed by over $300 million and strategic partnerships with global leaders across mining, steel, and big tech, momentum is on our side Recognized by Fast Company as a Most Innovative Company and a Next Big Thing in Tech, and named one of TIME’s 100 Climate Leaders, we’re building a company shaping the future of industry. If you’re looking to make an impact and join a team that’s driven, focused, and scaling, we want to hear from you.

What you will do:

Electra is seeking a Mechanical Systems Engineer II to help develop and scale the next generation of clean iron production. In this role, you will design and support mechanical systems with ownership of defined components or subsystems within larger process systems across lab, pilot, demonstration, and future commercial facilities. You’ll work closely with a highly collaborative team of process, automation, electrical, and operations engineers to turn first-of-a-kind concepts into safe, practical, and scalable plant solutions. This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer who enjoys hands-on problem solving, cross-functional teamwork, and the challenge of shaping real industrial hardware in a fast-moving climate technology company.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design and support mechanical systems and equipment within defined subsystems for Electra’s process, utility, slurry, solids handling, and plant infrastructure systems.
  • Develop layouts, general arrangements, piping details, equipment lists, and drawing packages for skids, pilot systems, plant tie-ins, and facility projects.
  • Independently select and specify mechanical equipment within assigned scope such as pumps, tanks, valves, piping, filters, heat exchangers, supports, and material handling equipment.
  • Translate process flow diagrams, P&IDs, and test objectives into practical mechanical designs for installation, operation, and scale-up.
  • Partner with process, automation, electrical, structural, operations, maintenance, EHS, technicians, vendors, and contractors to deliver integrated plant solutions.
  • Lead and support fabrication, installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and field updates within defined scope for pilot and plant equipment.
  • Review vendor quotes, technical submittals, and fabrication details to ensure selected solutions meet project needs and operating requirements.
  • Create and maintain 3D models, mechanical drawings, and controlled design documentation using CAD and standard engineering tools.
  • Contribute to design reviews, hazard reviews, lessons learned, and continuous improvement of mechanical design standards and practices.
  • Follow all workplace health, safety, and environmental procedures and perform other duties as assigned.

What we need you to bring to the team:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electromechanical, or related engineering discipline
  • 2+ years of mechanical engineering experience in industrial process, pilot plant, manufacturing, or plant infrastructure environments
  • Experience translating process requirements into mechanical equipment selections, piping layouts, skid designs, and engineering documentation
  • Working knowledge of pumps, valves, tanks, piping, filters, heat transfer equipment, supports, utility systems, and solids or slurry handling equipment
  • Ability to use P&IDs, process descriptions, test plans, and layout constraints to develop practical mechanical designs
  • Experience supporting fabrication, installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, or field modifications for process equipment
  • Proficiency with CAD and engineering documentation tools
  • Strong collaboration, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment with increasing independence

What we want you to bring to the team:

  • Experience in electrochemical, hydrometallurgical, chemical process, metallurgical, mining, or other industrial plant environments
  • Familiarity with slurry transport, solution handling, filtration, solids processing, reagent distribution, or pilot plant utility systems
  • Experience with materials selection and equipment specification for corrosive, abrasive, aqueous, or solids-laden service
  • Ability to read P&IDs, isometrics, general arrangements, piping layouts, and related engineering drawings
  • Experience supporting design reviews, HAZOP or similar hazard reviews, commissioning, and startup activities
  • Familiarity with applicable codes, standards, and good engineering practices for industrial mechanical design
  • Experience in a startup, scale-up, or first-of-a-kind process technology environment

Compensation:

  • The anticipated starting pay range for this position is $85,000 to $105,000 and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education.

Benefits For You:

  • 100% paid premiums across all medical, dental, vision, telemedicine, short-term disability, long-term disability, and basic life insurance plans
  • $1,800 in annual employer HSA contributions (health savings account)

Benefits For Your Family:

  • 100% paid premiums across all medical, dental, vision, and telemedicine plans
  • 12 weeks of paid parental leave

Benefits For Your Future:

  • 401k with up to 5% matching contributions which vest 100% on day one
  • Eligibility for incentive stock options
