Job Description

The Mechanical Systems Design Subject Matter Expert (SME) will serve as the technical authority for mechanical structural support assemblies and coolant pumping component projects. They bridge the gap between engineering, manufacturing, and field execution to ensure metal frame designs are structurally sound, cost-effective, and fully manufacturable. They ensure the frame handles dynamic loads, maintains component alignment, and resist external loadings and environments.  Engagement will be for near term and future R&D efforts. This is a fully remote role that will require 50% travel.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Create, validate, and optimize detailed metal framing concepts and shop drawings using 3D modeling software like SolidWorks.
  • Ensure framing designs comply with fabrication limitations, optimize material usage, and reduce tooling and scrap rates.
  • Ensure all metal frame designs meet local building codes, load requirements, and industry standards.
  • Evaluate structural failures, interferences, or manufacturing defects and provide actionable, data-driven corrective actions.
  • Act as the primary technical liaison between customer, manufacturing, internal and external supply partners for related topics..
  • Mentor engineers, technicians, and production staff on mechanical system design best practices.

Basic (required) Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar field, backed by significant hands-on industry experience (higher level degree preferred).
  • 8-10 years of relevant experience.
  • Eaton will not consider applicants for employment immigration sponsorship or support for this position. This means that Eaton will not support any CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT plans, F-1 to H-1B, H-1B cap registration, O-1, E-3, TN status, I-485 job portability, etc.
  • Must be open to a fully remote position with 50% travel (global travel included)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep understanding of metallurgy, structural loading, and the mechanical properties of materials.
  • Design structural steel skids and heavy-duty baseplates for industrial pumping assemblies.
  • Incorporate structural dampening, gussets, and anchor points to handle high dynamic loads and minimize resonance.
  • Ensure mechanical assemblies maintain strict flatness tolerances.
  • Expert understanding of heavy metal fabrication, including structural steel welding (AWS D1.1), machining, and stress-relieving heat treatments.
  • Understanding of how pump casings, motors, gearboxes, couplings and pipe assembly alignment interacts with frame assemblies.
  • Understand solution planning for how frame assemblies will be lifted, transported and installed in end applications.
  • Understanding of corrosion protection options like hot-dip galvanizing, epoxy coatings, or zinc primers for application of solutions in various environments.
  • High proficiency in Finite Element Analysis to simulate lifting, transportation, and operational vibration stresses.
  • Deep knowledge of API 610 (baseplate criteria), PIP RESP002, and AISC structural welding codes.
  • Advanced knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) for tight-tolerance fabrication and assembly integration.
