The Managing Director, Head of Business Development builds and leads Matter's organic growth strategy, creating the systems and capabilities that turn relationships with prospective UHNW families and referral sources into clients. Reporting to the CEO, you partner closely with leaders across Investment Management, Wealth Planning & Coordination, and Family Culture & Learning. You develop key relationships personally while building the infrastructure for business development to scale across the firm.
Responsibilities- Develop and execute Matter's organic growth strategy with the CEO and leadership team, including target markets, ideal client profiles, and business development objectives
- Build the firm's business development methodology, including pipeline stages, prospect qualification, opportunity scoring, proposals, and conversion standards
- Implement CRM practices, reporting, forecasting, and KPIs, and report progress, trends, and risks to leadership
- Build a pipeline of prospective families, centers of influence, and referral partners, and personally lead high-value prospect relationships through onboarding
- Grow introductions from attorneys, CPAs, bankers, and investment and family office professionals, and represent Matter at industry events
- Partner with Marketing and leadership to refine Matter's positioning, and with service teams to develop tailored proposals for prospective families
- Evaluate prospective relationships for fit, complexity, profitability, risk, and capacity, and create a clear handoff to client service teams
- Coach professionals involved in business development and build organizational capability so growth does not depend on a few individuals
- 10+ years of progressive experience in business development, relationship management, wealth or investment management, family office, or professional services
- Demonstrated success developing relationships with HNW/UHNW families, family offices, and their trusted advisors, with a strong understanding of the family office ecosystem
- Proven track record of generating and converting significant new business
- Experience building or improving business development processes, systems, and metrics
- Ability to operate effectively with C-suite executives, sophisticated clients, and influential external stakeholders
- Exceptional judgment, discretion, integrity, emotional intelligence, and communication skills
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred
