Overview
The SALT Manager will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of state and local income tax compliance, planning, audits, and consulting for a diverse client base. This individual will collaborate directly with firm partners and team members in delivering superior quality income tax consulting and compliance services. The SALT Manager is responsible for the development, motivation, and supervision of SALT engagement team members. This includes providing leadership, coaching, and career guidance to foster a high-performing team and ensure the delivery of superior quality and service to clients.
Major Responsibilities
- Review state income, franchise, and other state and local tax returns for accuracy and completeness.
- Identify, research and consult on complex state and local tax matters.
- Utilize tax-related software to prepare, review, and process returns.
- Respond to inquiries, notices, and audit requests from tax authorities.
- Review client documentation and SALT workpapers for completeness and technical accuracy.
- Work closely with partners and team members to promptly resolve client issues or tax matters.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with client management
- Maintain working knowledge of accounting principles and federal taxation.
- Exhibit expertise in state and local tax compliance, planning, and consulting.
- Plan and complete assignments efficiently while recognizing, researching, documenting, and resolving technical tax issues.
- Gain a thorough understanding of client operations, processes, and business objectives to support tax planning and consulting services.
Engagement & Practice Management
- Supervise SALT engagement teams and manage workflow, scheduling, billing, and collections.
- Ensure all client engagements are completed accurately, efficiently, and timely.
- Participate in firm practice development activities, including proposals, presentations, and client meetings.
- Maintain awareness of industry trends, legislative changes, and government regulations.
- Attend professional development and training sessions regularly.
- Some travel may be required.
Leadership & Team Development
- Serve as a mentor and advocate for team members, providing timely, candid feedback, and supporting the Firm’s performance management process.
- Foster a positive, collaborative team environment focused on superior quality service and professional growth.
- Assist in developing career paths and growth opportunities for team members.
- Demonstrate positive contributions to the Firm’s recruitment, education, development, and retention initiatives through active involvement in recruiting efforts, staff training and mentoring, performance management, and initiatives that promote employee engagement and long-term retention.

- Actively participate in business development efforts, including proposals, presentations, and identifying new client opportunities
- Actively participate in professional, community, and industry organizations to expand the Firm’s visibility and network.
- Deliver exceptional client service to retain business, encourage referrals, and expand services to existing clients.
- Identify opportunities to provide additional Firm services that improve client operations and outcomes.
- Demonstrate ability to cultivate and expand professional relationships with clients, firm leadership, and external stakeholders to strengthen client engagement, generate new opportunities, and support firm growth
Preferred Experience/Background/Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting (preferred), Finance, Taxation, or related field required.
- 5-8+ years of state & local income tax experience in public accounting or corporate tax
- CPA or other similar professional designations
- Advanced technical knowledge of state & local income tax laws, regulations, nexus rules, and tax planning strategies
- Ability to manage multiple engagements and deadlines effectively.
Ability to demonstrate proficiency with Firm-adopted technology systems and databases.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal, analytical and research abilities
- Demonstrate leadership, mentoring, and team building capabilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word and Excel required)
- Strict adherence to professional ethics
- The typical office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Ability to work extra hours February through April
- Travel for this position will be minimal
- Ability to sit for long periods of time
- Ability to move throughout office
- Ability to lift, carry, push, pull up to 10 pounds
