Base Compensation Range: $134,500 - $168,000
*In addition, you qualify for:

  • Annual bonus opportunity of 15% based on company performance
  • Annual equity award of $14,000

Job Summary

The Manager, Mechanical Engineering is responsible for overseeing and leading the mechanical engineering team. Directing the design, development, testing, and continuous improvement of mechanical systems and components, ensuring that projects meet performance, quality, and cost objectives. Plays a key role in shaping the company’s technical direction, fostering innovation, and aligning engineering efforts with the company’s overall goals. This role also involves driving engineering excellence, supporting the professional growth of team members, effectively managing resources, and collaborating with other departments to deliver high-quality mechanical solutions.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership & Development:
    • Lead and manage a team of mechanical engineers, providing direction, mentoring, and career development opportunities.
    • Ensure that team members are effectively utilized, equipped with the necessary skills, and aligned with both engineering and company goals.
    • Conduct performance reviews, provide feedback, and create development plans to foster continuous improvement within the team.
    • Promote a collaborative and innovative culture, encouraging team members to take initiative, solve complex problems, and contribute to company success.

  • Project Management & Execution:
    • Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of mechanical engineering projects, ensuring they meet quality, timeline, and budget targets.
    • Manage resource allocation and prioritize projects based on business needs and technical requirements.
    • Work with other engineering managers, departments, and product teams to ensure cross-functional collaboration and project alignment.
    • Establish project timelines and milestones, track progress, and adjust plans as needed to meet deadlines.
    • Handle the escalation of project issues, delays, or risks, ensuring timely resolution and minimal impact on deliverables.

  • Design & Systems Engineering:
    • Supervise the design and development of mechanical systems, components, and assemblies to meet technical, performance, and regulatory requirements.
    • Provide technical guidance on mechanical design, material selection, manufacturability, and cost efficiency.
    • Review and approve mechanical design specifications, calculations, drawings, and simulations to ensure adherence to engineering standards and best practices.
    • Lead the team in developing and improving mechanical systems and components, addressing any performance, safety, or reliability issues as they arise.
    • Ensure that mechanical designs are optimized for integration with other engineering disciplines (e.g., electrical, software).

  • Process Improvement & Standardization:
    • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance engineering processes, tools, and methodologies.
    • Develop and implement best practices and standardized procedures for mechanical design, testing, and quality assurance.
    • Evaluate new technologies, software, and techniques to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the mechanical engineering team.
    • Foster a culture of innovation by encouraging the exploration of new materials, manufacturing methods, and product designs.

  • Collaboration & Cross-Functional Communication:
    • Work closely with product management, electrical, software, and quality teams to ensure engineering designs align with product goals and requirements.
    • Partner with manufacturing and operations teams to ensure mechanical designs are feasible and can be effectively produced at scale.
    • Provide regular updates to senior management on project progress, team performance, and any challenges or risks that could impact deliverables.
    • Engage with external partners, suppliers, or contractors as needed to support product development or manufacturing efforts.

  • Quality & Compliance:
    • Ensure that all mechanical designs and engineering processes comply with relevant industry standards, regulations, and safety requirements.
    • Oversee testing, validation, and quality assurance processes to ensure that all mechanical systems and components meet the required standards.
    • Ensure that design reviews, testing protocols, and quality control measures are implemented and followed to meet project specifications.

  • Budget & Resource Management:
    • Manage the mechanical engineering department’s budget, ensuring efficient use of resources and adherence to financial constraints.
    • Coordinate the procurement of materials, tools, and equipment required for engineering projects, ensuring cost-effectiveness and availability.
    • Monitor and manage resource allocation to ensure that projects are adequately supported and that engineering teams have the necessary tools and equipment.

  • Risk Management:
    • Identify potential technical risks associated with mechanical engineering projects and develop mitigation strategies.
    • Lead efforts to resolve engineering challenges, address unforeseen issues, and minimize any potential delays in the project lifecycle.

Experience/Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Minimum of 8 - 10 years of experience in mechanical engineering, with a minimum of 3 - 5 years in a management or leadership role.

 Knowledge and Skillsets Required

  • Strong ability to lead and motivate engineering teams, providing mentorship and fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration.
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to oversee multiple projects, allocate resources, and meet deadlines.
  • Deep understanding of mechanical design principles, materials science, and system integration.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify challenges and develop practical solutions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information to both engineering and non-engineering stakeholders.
  • Ability to work effectively across departments and with external partners, vendors, and customers.
  • High attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate and high-quality designs.

Physical Demands:

  • Sitting: Often for extended periods at desks or meetings.
  • Standing or walking: Occasionally for meetings or office tasks.
  • Using computers: Typing and using office equipment.
  • Lifting: Light, less than 10 pounds.
  • Repetitive motions: Frequent use of keyboard and mouse. 

Environmental Conditions:

  • Workspace: Climate control (air conditioning or heating) to ensure comfort.
  • Lighting: Adjustable lighting to reduce eye strain.
  • Noise Levels: The noise level is moderate, with occasional interruptions from phone calls and conversations. Use non-canceling headphones if necessary.
  • Ergonomics: Workstations with desk and adjustable chairs to support good postures.
  • Ventilation: Good ventilation to ensure a comfortable working environment, though this can vary depending on the building.
