The Legal Assistant will support attorneys by preparing legal documents, maintaining files, and assisting with court filings and case preparations.
Legal Assistant
ROLE
We need an experienced Legal Assistant at the United States Attorney’s Office (USAO) for the District of Colorado. The USAO prosecutes and defends cases on behalf of the federal government and requires direct-funded contractor support in its Denver headquarters. In this role, you will support the work of the civil and/or criminal divisions by preparing legal documents, maintaining legal files, scanning discovery, and assisting with case preparation and court filing processes. You’ll work closely with attorneys, paralegals, and administrative personnel to ensure timely and accurate handling of legal documentation and case files. This is a full-time opportunity. RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepares a variety of legal documents and correspondence in final format
- Assists attorneys in preparing for court; scans discovery into an automated system
- Maintains a court calendar, assembles trial and grand jury exhibits and notebooks
- Maintains a variety of legal files; ensures legal documentation is maintained correctly within specific case files; responsible for closing files to be stored onsite and shipping closed files to be archived offsite
- Assists attorneys and paralegal with the electronic filing of legal documents in CM/ECF (training provided)
- Reviews files and corrects any omissions in records; checks all closed files to ensure proper procedures have been followed and the closing process is complete
- Assists the Administrative Division with special projects, including but not limited to mail, moves, and court runs
- Serves as back-up receptionist
- Assists with various other assignments as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access) and Adobe Acrobat Professional
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to interact tactfully with people at all levels
- Ability to handle confidential information and meet established deadlines
- Familiarity with legal terminology and procedures; ability to review legal and non-legal documents
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a team setting
COMPENSATION
- This position is covered by the Service Contract Act (SCA). The government-set pay rate for this role is $25.15 per hour. In addition, employees receive $5.09 per hour (up to 40 hours per week), from the employer, to be applied toward health insurance or paid in cash if not used for benefits. Benefits also include paid federal holidays, annual paid leave, and access to employer-sponsored retirement savings plans.
