The Team
As part of Upstart’s Brand & Creative Team, we shape and elevate the brand across all digital surfaces, ensuring our website and content are discoverable, engaging, and strategically optimized for growth. This role will be a key part of our "Web Tiger Team", working alongside our Lead Web & Experience Designer to drive organic discoverability, SEO, brand content strategy, and conversion optimization.
As a Lead Web & Content Strategist, you will own Upstart’s SEO and content strategy, ensuring our website and blog are structured for discoverability, user engagement, and conversion. You’ll define how we attract and retain organic traffic, partner closely with design, marketing, and freelance writers, and ensure our content is positioned for long-term growth in an AI-driven search landscape.
This role is best-suited for someone who is equally data-driven and creative, combining technical SEO, behavioral and cultural insights, and content roadmaps to make our web ecosystem a high-performing growth engine.
How you’ll make an impact:
- Own & Execute Web Content Strategy – Lead site content structure, product pages, blog planning, and SEO strategy to drive organic discoverability and engagement.
- Partner with Lead Web Designer – Work closely with our Lead Web & Experience Designer to ensure SEO-informed page architecture, content structure, and conversion-driven optimizations.
- Lead Blog & Editorial Strategy – Own content roadmapping, working with freelance writers and internal stakeholders to create high-impact, educational, and mid-funnel content
- Analyze & Improve Organic Performance – Use SEO tools (Google Search Console, SEMrush, Ahrefs, etc.), user behavior insights, and A/B testing to optimize for traffic, engagement, and conversion.
- Future-Proof Against AI Search Changes – Stay ahead of AI-driven changes to organic search, consider alternative search ecosystems and channels, advising Upstart on new content opportunities.
- Identify Growth Opportunities – Work autonomously to uncover gaps in our organic strategy and propose new ways to drive growth across channels.
- Collaborate and Advocate Cross-Functionally – Partner with Marketing, Product, Design, and Growth teams to ensure content aligns with broader company goals, roadmaps are right-sized to capacities, and pro-actively advocate for the tools, plans or resources you need to drive success.
What we’re looking for:
- Minimum requirements:
- 8+ years of experience in SEO, content strategy, web growth, and/or content-driven growth
- Proven experience owning and executing SEO and content strategies for a high-performing brand website
- Experience optimizing blog ecosystems, educational content, and conversion-oriented pages
- Ability to analyze data and user behavior insights to inform strategy
- Comfortable working in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment, proactively identifying opportunities and solutions
- Proficiency in SEO tools (Google Search Console, SEMrush, Ahrefs, Screaming Frog, etc.)
- Preferred qualifications:
- Strong grasp of AI-driven changes in search, including LLMs, AI-generated content indexing, and alternative discovery methods
- Background in A/B testing, content optimization, and user journey mapping
- Experience with YouTube, TikTok, and other organic content discovery channels
- Familiarity with headless CMS platforms, Webflow, and technical SEO best practicesPassion for building and scaling organic growth strategies in innovative ways

Position Location - This role is available in the following locations: Remote
Time Zone Requirements - This team operates on the East/West Coast time zones.
Travel Requirements - This team has regular on-site collaboration sessions. If you need to travel to make these meetups, Upstart will cover all travel related expenses.
At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated base salary for this position is expected to be within the below range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.
