We are looking for a Lead SRE to join our Infrastructure team within our Cloud Engineering & Operations division. CE&O ensures the continuous availability of the technologies and systems that are the foundation of athenahealth’s services. We are directly responsible for thousands of servers, petabytes of storage, and handling thousands of web requests per second, all while sustaining growth at a meteoric rate. We enable an operating system for the medical office that removes administrative complexity, leaving doctors free to practice medicine.  But enough about us; let’s talk about you.  
    
You are an engineer with a passion for automating infrastructure. Manual processes irk you, so you take the time upfront to develop a solution to automate them in as simplistic fashion as possible. You love working in a large environment so you can solve challenges that become more complex with scale. What’s most important to you is learning new things- and you’re seeking the best environment to enable that growth for yourself.  
    
The Team: We are responsible for providing infrastructure operational services to internal customers from conceptualization, requirements gathering, implementation planning and release.  We provide first and second tier operational engineering support for a variety of technologies, including but not limited to systems administration, virtualization, monitoring, and configuration/automation management.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

Internal Team Initiatives and Operations

  • Deliver customer value in the form of high-quality software components and services in adherence on delivering values
  • Write, debug, and deploy scripts/api/configuration management to production
  • Volunteer for work in the backlog and commit to quality delivery; Coordinate efforts across the team to ensure completion and effectiveness

External Team Initiatives and Operations

  • Build strong relationships with cross-functional team members and neighboring teams
  • Work collaboratively across Technology and Product organizations to ensure alignment towards business goals

Typical Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of experience in an engineering or systems administration role
  • Familiarity of working in an Agile environment preferred
  • Familiarity with enterprise server, storage and networking architecture and technology
  • Experience working with Dell PowerEdge server platforms preferred
  • Familiarity of server production and lifecycle workflows is highly desirable
  • Experience with VMware vSphere (7.x, 8.x), VMware PowerCLI, VRealize Suite, ESXi.
  • Experience with Windows Server (Server 2019/2022) administration, troubleshooting, and scripting (PowerShell)
  • Experience with Linux administration and scripting (Red Hat, CentOS, OEL), KVM.
  • Strong knowledge of DNS, including internal and external providers across disparate DNS providers
  • Automation frameworks like Puppet/Ansible -- automating a real-world production environment.
  • Familiarity with Backup technologies such as NetBackup or Rubrik preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience

  • Ability to work collaboratively on a cross-functional team with a wide range of experience levels and skillsets
  • Ability to write and peer review scripts/APIs/code that is technically sound, performant, scalable, and readable
  • Ability to collaborate with business/application owners to understand and refine ambiguous technical requirements
  • Ability to adopt an “automation first” mentality when solving technical issues
  • Ability to identify, remediate, and prevent technical debt
  • Participation in team on-call rotation to triage and resolve production incidents is required
