Start the Best Work of Your Career at Boom

At Boom, we’re building supersonic aircraft that push the limits of engineering—and we need landing gear systems that do the same. From touchdown loads to retraction dynamics, these systems face some of the toughest demands on the airplane.

We’re looking for a Landing Gear Systems Design Engineer to join our mechanical systems team and take the lead on one of the most structurally demanding, safety-critical systems on the airplane. You bring the engineering instincts to balance weight, strength, and reliability—and the curiosity to learn fast and drive the system through design, build, and test. In this role, you’ll bring your deep experience to a clean-sheet aircraft—and help us deliver performance without compromise.

Role Overview:

  • Lead the design, analysis, and development of landing gear systems that meet airworthiness requirements
  • Balance complex tradeoffs across strength, weight, packaging, damping, and maintainability—from OLEO modeling to tire selection
  • Guide the qualification and test of major components including actuators, linkages, wheels, and brakes
  • Work hand-in-hand with hydraulic, structural, and control systems engineers to ensure seamless integration
  • Architect digital models (Simulation, kinematic, analytical) to support design validation, optimization, and traceability
  • Drive supplier collaboration for everything from steering systems to brake assemblies

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering
  • Experience with hydraulic systems and landing gear actuation
  • Hands-on understanding of brakes, tires, retraction systems, and steering kinematics
  • A collaborative mindset and strong communication skills—you know how to lead a review, build trust, and drive decisions
  • Experience with the full lifecycle: clean-sheet design, trade studies, analysis, test, and in-service support.

What Will Set You Apart:

  • Familiarity with industry standards (ARP4754, SAE, ASTM) and proper application of them.
  • Experience with 5,000psi hydraulics systems
  • Experience with integration of gear systems including exterior lighting, sensors, emergency blow down mechanisms.
  • Track record guiding suppliers through qualification and certification
  • Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) knowledge and systems thinking mindset
  • Project leadership experience within multidisciplinary aerospace teams
  • Curiosity, creativity, and composure under pressure—you think fast, learn fast, and stay focused when stakes are high
  • You’ve used coding and AI not just for flash, but to cut through repetitive tasks, speed up workflows, and make smarter decisions faster.

Compensation

The Base Salary Range for this position is $133,000 - $169,000 per year. Actual salaries will vary based on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Boom’s total rewards package for employees. Other rewards may include long term incentives/equity, a flexible PTO policy, and many other progressive benefits.

There is no set deadline to apply for this job opportunity. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the search is no longer active.

ITAR Requirement
