Job Summary
Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) supports the effective and timely development and operation of national security systems through scientific research and the application of advanced technologies. PSL has more than 150 specialized laboratories used to test, analyze, and troubleshoot virtually every aspect of rocket and satellite system design, development, construction, deployment, and operation. The diverse expertise of the laboratories' technical staff allows PSL to stay abreast of new technological developments and program support issues associated with rapidly evolving space systems.
The Photonics Technology Department (PTD) is hiring a highly motivated Laboratory Technician (Technical Specialist-Electromechanical) to support our photonics laboratories for lab operations. The role of lab operations technician is to support the engineering teams through lab activities such as assembling parts and components, performing repairs, optical alignment and calibration. This role will require organic interactions with engineers and management in the group and across the organization, resulting in efficient and productive operation of the lab.
Candidates with prior experience with R&D lab operations, optical components, and electro-optical systems are especially encouraged to apply.
Work Model
This is a full-time position based in El Segundo, CA, which requires 100% onsite work.
What You'll Be Doing
  • Assist in maintaining the laboratory operations and environment, including organization, cleanliness, equipment inventory management, and calibration.
  • Collaborate with staff in assembling and testing optical and photonic systems in a research and development laboratory environment.
  • Acquire laboratory supplies and measurement and test equipment for the labs.

What You Need to be Successful
Minimum Requirements:
  • At least one year of experience with an associate's degree or equivalent vocational/military training, or three years of relevant experience with a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience working in a laboratory or equivalent environment, adhering to safety procedures and maintaining measurement and test equipment.
  • Basic proficiency with mechanical hand tools, e.g. screwdriver and wrench.
  • Ability to assist in moving instrumentation and other laboratory assets.
  • Basic proficiency with standard business applications such as Microsoft Office.
  • Capability to work under minimal supervision, self-initiate activities, and meet timelines.
  • Willing to travel occasionally to work location domestically or internationally approx. 10% if required.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

How You Can Stand Out
It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
  • Familiarity with optical systems, lasers and electro-optical mounts
  • Familiarity with effective laboratory inventory organization
  • Experience on laser safety
  • Experience with test programming languages such as Labview
  • Experience with SolidWorks
  • Active security clearance

Individual salaries within that range are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge and skills.
