Role Summary
Our Cranberry, PA lab is the hub of hardware innovation at Sophos, and we’re looking for a Hardware Test Engineer to take it to the next level. This is a hands-on, highly varied role where no two days look the same; you might be repairing prototypes, automating test plans, staging customer issues, or fine-tuning thermal and RF chambers.
You’ll be the go-to resource onsite, ensuring the lab runs smoothly while continuously improving its capabilities. Working closely with global teams in Taiwan and India, you’ll bridge development and testing, bringing hardware to life and making sure it’s battle-ready before it ships.
This role will require you to be onsite 5 days a week out of our Cranberry, PA 16066 office.
What You Will Do
- Develop and maintain the hardware engineering team’s lab test capabilities, including test processes, test equipment, and lab facilities
- Understand the capabilities, usage, and best practices for the wide range of test equipment present in the lab (network protocol, electronic, power, thermal, acoustic, RF)
- Hardware product testing
- Prepare hardware test samples
- Develop and execute detailed hardware test plans
- Develop and maintain test automations
- Prepare reports of test results
- Stage and reproduce customer field issues
- Hardware sample maintenance and repair
- Prototype management
- Prototype bring-up and repair as needed (e.g., SMT rework)
- Install system OS (Ubuntu/proprietary)
- Update BIOS/BMC on systems
- Connect to lab infrastructure
- Facilities creation and maintenance, physical deployment
- Machine room (servers) with racks and AC systems
- Labs with benches and extensive test equipment
- Special facilities (thermal chambers, EMC chambers)
- Power distribution and management
- Network distribution and management
- Procurement
- Documentation
- Calibrations and repairs
- Interact with building, corporate facilities, and IT groups
- Allocation and distribution of resources (benches, storage, prototypes)
What You Will Bring
- Curiosity and day to day work flexibility that is required by the breadth of this role
- A strong motivation to maintain and improve the capabilities and practices used in the lab
- Prior hands-on hardware experience and interest in lab work, at least a few years
- Rework and technical skills for modern electronics, including debugging skills (or a willingness to undergo training)
- Familiarity with component types, BOMs and AVLs
- Ability to read and follow schematics
- Familiarity with lab and test equipment (oscilloscopes, protocol analyzers, network analyzers)
- RF test experience or Ham radio experience is a plus.
- Working knowledge of databases, spreadsheets, inventory tools
- Linux/Python experience
- Strong organizational skills
- Good communication skills
In the United States, the base salary for this role ranges from $70,000 to $116,000. In addition to base salary, we offer additional compensation including bonus eligibility and a comprehensive benefits package. A candidate’s specific pay within this range will depend on a variety of factors, including job-related skills, training, location, experience, relevant education, certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
