The Growth Product Designer will improve user experiences for nonprofits by designing high-converting landing pages, onboarding flows, and core product features while driving growth through experimentation and data-driven design.
Hello, we’re Instrumentl.
We’re a mission-driven startup helping the nonprofit sector to drive impact, and we’re well on our way to becoming the #1 most-loved grant discovery and management tool. To help us get there, we’re hiring a Growth Product Designer to build innovative technology for our nonprofit customers.
About us:
Instrumentl is a hypergrowth YC-backed startup with over 5,000 nonprofit clients, from local homeless shelters to larger organizations like the San Diego Zoo and the University of Alaska. We are building the future of fundraising automation, helping nonprofits to discover, track, and manage grants efficiently through our SaaS platform.
Our charts are dramatically up-and-to-the-right 📈 — we’re cash flow positive and doubling year-over-year, with customers who love us (NPS is 65+ and Ellis PMF survey is 60+).
About the role:
This role blends product design and growth-driven experimentation. You’ll design across the full user journey — from high-converting landing pages to onboarding flows to core product features that help nonprofits succeed. Most weeks involve a mix of product improvements and targeted growth initiatives. You’ll help translate data, user insights, and hypotheses into designs that drive clear outcomes.
You’ll report to Hope (Lead Product Designer) and work closely with Growth and Product. Get to know us at instrumentl.com/about! We can’t wait to meet you.
The Instrumentl team is fully distributed (though if you’d like to work from our Oakland office, we would love to see you there). For this position, we are looking for significant overlap with the Pacific time zone - as a close-knit team, we want to have (virtual) face time with you, watch your cat roam in the background, and take polaroids together in FigJam.
The ideal candidate:
- 5+ years of product design experience (B2B SaaS preferred) 🦾: You’re a versatile product designer with strong problem-solving and visual design skills.
- Product design 🧠: You’ve crafted user flows, iterated through concepts, partnered with cross-functional teams, and watched your work spark delight. You’re excited to help nonprofits discover, research, and manage grants.
- Collaborative owner 📈: You take ownership of outcomes, seek feedback early, and raise the bar for quality while staying aligned with business goals.
- Strategic problem solver 💡: You can sift through user feedback, analytics, and constraints to identify root causes and opportunities — and you make thoughtful, insight-driven design decisions.
- Growth-oriented 🌱: You navigate ambiguity with confidence and curiosity, and you’re motivated by learning, experimentation, and continuous improvement.
- Generalist 🤹: You enjoy a mix of projects — from conversion-focused landing pages to polished product features — and you’re energized by variety.
Must-have skills:
- Genuine interest in nonprofits, early-stage startups, and b2b SaaS
- Strong foundation in product design
- Figma expertise: user flows, wireframes, mockups, prototypes
- Visual design fundamentals: color, hierarchy, layout, typography
- Usability and responsive design fundamentals
- Designing for specific audiences and clear conversion goals
- Experience with funnel optimization
- Experience participating in A/B testing and using experimentation tools (e.g., Optimizely, Adobe Target, Google Optimize)
- Ability to interpret analytics (e.g., Heap, FullStory) to uncover opportunities
- Understanding of responsive web design and cross-browser/platform behavior
- Interest in strengthening Instrumentl’s design practice alongside the design team — including design systems, design principles, and brand evolution
Nice-to-have skills:
- Experience conducting user interviews or usability testing
- Basic understanding of HTML and CSS
- Experience using Webflow
- Graphic design or illustration experience
- Familiarity with SEO
Compensation and Benefits:
- Salary ranges are based on market data, relative to our size, industry, and stage of growth. Salary is one part of total compensation, which also includes equity, perks, and competitive benefits.
- For US-based candidates, our target salary band is $130,000 - $160,000/year + equity. Salary decisions will be based on multiple factors including geographic location, qualifications for the role, skillset, proficiency, and experience level.
- 100% covered health, dental, and vision insurance for employees, 50% for dependents
- Generous PTO policy, including parental leave
- 401(k)
- Company laptop + stipend to set up your home workstation
- Company retreats for in-person time with your colleagues
- Work with awesome nonprofits around the US. We partner with incredible organizations doing meaningful work, and you get to help power their success.
