About Us

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. Description of Work

This position reports to the Maintenance Supervisor at a multi-custody male correctional facility and works in the Maintenance Department providing technical guidance and supervision to the grounds crew. This position’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Providing construction, modification, and general upkeep of grounds areas with work assignments involving the standard application of horticultural practices.
2. Conferring with superiors concerning proposed work assignments and suggesting practical ways to schedule work procedures.
3. Supervising assigned crews in mowing lawns, constructing sidewalks, parking lots, formal gardens, and in general grounds maintenance activities.
4. Supervising equipment operators and grounds personnel in excavating areas, removing trees, and wrecking old buildings.
5. Supervising the repair of surfaced roads and the removal of trash, leaves, and snow.
6. Preparing requisitions for supplies, materials, and equipment.
7. Conferring with nurserymen concerning plant adaptability, accepted usage, and sources of supply.
8. Coordinating grounds upkeep work with building maintenance personnel so that equipment, labs, and materials can be more efficiently utilized.
9. Performing other related work and duties as needed.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the Minimum Education and Experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/Management Preferences are not required but applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Documented knowledge of the horticultural practices and/or techniques applicable to the layout and/or upkeep of formal gardens and/or grounds.

  • Documented working knowledge of landscaping.

About Central Prison

Central Prison in Raleigh, NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations, including death row and safe-keepers. 

While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells, there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen, laundry or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers, janitors and clerks. Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings, Bible studies or worship services.
