The Grid Integration Engineer II integrates solar energy systems into the electrical grid, evaluating grid impact, collaborating with teams, and ensuring successful project execution.
ROLE OVERVIEW
Pivot Energy is seeking a skilled Grid Integration Engineer with expertise in Transmission and Distribution Power Systems and experience integrating solar renewables to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the seamless integration of solar energy systems into the electrical grid, optimizing performance, and maintaining grid stability. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to implement innovative solutions and overcome technical challenges in renewable energy integration.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ability to apply knowledge of interconnection processes and regulatory frameworks to active projects. Interprets and follows applicable codes and utility tariffs.
- Review detailed feasibility studies and technical assessments to evaluate grid impact and optimize system performance while suggesting mitigation methods for Pivot Energy to integrate solar renewable energy into the EDC’s grid.
- Develop and execute test plans to validate grid connection and performance of solar projects. Test plans may include running self-modeled power flow to pre-determine grid impacts during the project origination stage.
- Writes internal reports recommending promising technologies for further exploration.
- Prepares briefing materials on project interconnection denials/approvals for strategic decision-making.
- Collaborates with utilities, developers, and internal teams to address system integration needs and ensure project milestones are met.
- Provide technical expertise and support during project planning, execution, and commissioning phases.
- Stay updated on industry trends, regulations, and emerging technologies related to grid integration and renewable energy
- Contribute to a culture of accountability, inclusion, and mutual respect.
- Challenge assumptions by asking questions and exploring alternative perspectives thinking “outside the box”.
- Regularly seek opportunities to incorporate data into work in innovative ways.
REQUIRED COMPENTICIES
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
- Master’s degree preferred / strong Power Systems discipline is preferred.
- 1+ years of experience in DER interconnection required
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in power systems analysis (i.e., distribution planning or transmission planning), grid integration teams, preferably in solar renewables.
- Proficiency in grid modeling software (e.g., PSS/E, PSCAD, Cyme, Synergi) and familiarity with industry standards such as IEEE, IEC, and NEC.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
- Proven track record of delivering successful projects within budget and schedule constraints.
- Must be analytical, self-motivated, and possess the ability to work in high-pressure situations while maintaining a positive, enthusiastic attitude
PREFERRED COMPETENCIES
- EIT certification.
- Experience with energy storage systems and their integration into solar projects. - Knowledge of energy management systems (EMS) and SCADA systems.
- Sub-transmission (34.5 – 69 kV) and Distribution level (34.5 kV and below) Protection and Control relay settings and coordination
- Familiarity with renewable energy policies, incentives, and regulatory frameworks.
