The role is part of the In-Space Systems business unit, which is focused on addressing two of the most compelling challenges in spaceflight today: space infrastructure and increasing mobility on-orbit.

As a GNC Controls Engineer II, you will support the development of embedded control systems (i.e. inner-loop) of novel electromechanical actuators. In a fast-paced dynamic environment, you will work in a multi-disciplinary team and collaborate with engineers from disciplines such as Guidance, Navigation and Control, software, electrical and power systems, systems engineering, C&DH, configuration & data management and Assembly, Integration & Test (AI&T), to ensure that the control system meets the requirements and performs as expected.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Perform conceptualization through qualification and validation of control systems of novel electromechanical actuators
  • Implement flight ready control systems in deeply embedded, hard real-time systems, in a team setting
  • Provide design requirements and implementation guidance for FPGA, real-time operating systems, and electrical engineering tasks,
  • Provide input and direction on state-of-the art hardware and firmware technologies for vertical integration initiatives
  • Support verification and testing, ensuring that the end-item components will meet the technical needs of our programs
  • Collaborate on the implementation of benchtop and hardware-in-the-loop testing

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical, Physics, Systems Engineering or related technical subject area with 4 years of experience OR PhD in related disciplines 
  • Experience with modeling and designing of embedded control systems, i.e. inner-loop control loop development
  • Familiarity with Classical Control Theory, Model Predictive Control, Adaptive Control or Field-Oriented-Control
  • Experience with analytical and scripting tools: Matlab, LabView, Python, C++
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast paced, dynamic work environment
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, standards and technical requirements
  • Ability to perform data analysis and reduction and present technical information in a clear and compelling visual format
  • Ability to earn trust and maintain positive and professional relationships.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Direct experience designing and handling GN&C actuation systems such as Reaction Wheel Assemblies (RWAs), Control Moment Gyros (CMGs), Thrust Vector Controls (TVCs) etc
  • Hands-on test and production facility, factory or laboratory experience
  • Implementation experience across multiple platforms including software and FPGA based systems
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) or benchtop testing
  • Experience in verification, validation and test of embedded software and hardware systems for flight critical applications.
  • Experience with electromagnetic systems, field oriented control and pulse width modulation techniques
  • Experience with requirements development/management tools; DOORS, DOORS Next Gen and lifecycle management (PLM) and/or data, Windchill

 

Compensation Range for:

CO applicants is $95,348.00-$133,486.50;WA applicants is $104,015.00-$145,620.30
