Geospatial Web Developer

The Geospatial Web Developer provides web application development expertise to support TNC’s diverse and geographically distributed conservation science and marketing communities.

The Geospatial Web Developer will support and develop web GIS applications and solutions according to system requirements following TNC methodologies and best practices. In supporting existing applications and advising professionals across our global organization, they will also play a key role in shaping web application guidelines as we strive for a more consistent approach to web map and application delivery across teams and platforms. While we extensively use Esri tools and technologies, we also use and support other platforms and technologies, including open-source geospatial software.

The Geospatial Web Developer is a member of the Conservation Application Development team but will work with other functional teams in the Conservation & Geospatial Systems group within Information Technology (IT), and with other TNC business units in a variety of development and design roles. The Web Developer will help in creating and maintaining web mapping applications and visualization tools focused on supporting our goal to conserve 4 billion hectares of Earth’s oceans, 650 million hectares of land, 30 million hectares of lakes and wetlands, and 1 million kilometers of river systems. The Geospatial Web Developer will spend approximately 75% of their time designing, developing and maintaining applications and infrastructure, including working with product owners to refine requirements and related tasks, and approximately 25% of their time providing guidance and support to others developing web mapping applications.

This is a fully remote position where the chosen candidate can work anywhere TNC is registered to work with preference to candidates who can serve Eastern and Pacific time zones.

This position is not eligible for relocation, or visa.

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE

• Analyze and document end-user and technology-user business requirements for technology projects with wide range of complexity at varying levels of impact on organization-wide initiatives.
• Design and develop new, complex technology systems and solutions according to system requirements following TNC methodology and development best practices.
• Act as lead technologist on technology application maintenance projects related to application upgrades, conversions, and modifications. Perform tasks assigned as required to complete project including design, development, running specific programs, generating reports, and analyzing results.
• Provide support for production problems as assigned.
• Act as quality assurance analyst to conduct peer reviews and validate programmer analyst work done for moderately complex systems before their release to production in all phases of the project life cycle.
• Act as Project or Technical Lead as assigned.  Develop accurate project plans with realistic estimations and provide technical expertise to team members and users to help resolve complex project-related problems.
• Learn continuously and seek opportunities to grow as a developer.

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, or a related field and three years of experience in programming and systems design OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
• Three years’ progressive experience with frontend web development (JS/TypeScript, HTML, CSS).
• Experience with UI/UX, web design and usability principles in application development.
• Experience with web mapping APIs (ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript, Mapbox, Leaflet), or other relevant geospatial experience.
• Experience with component-based frontend frameworks and libraries (e.g., Vue, Angular, React).
• Experience with source control and code repositories (e.g., Bitbucket, Github).
• Experience analyzing complex, system-wide technical specifications, debugging applications, and producing effective user and technical documentation.

• Ability to work on projects independently and with a team of developers.
• Experience using AI coding assistants for accelerating development tasks.
• Experience in both cartographic and graphic design, including mapping and charting libraries (e.g., Chart.js, amCharts, D3).
• Experience with ArcGIS Online (AGO) tools and platforms (e.g., Experience Builder, AGO dashboards).
• Backend development experience (experience with .NET/C# is a plus).
• Knowledge of database management systems (e.g., Esri’s File Geodatabase, PostgresSQL/PostGIS, AWS RDS, AWS Aurora, Microsoft SQL Server, or MySQL).
• Knowledge of and experience with cloud computing services (AWS preferred).
• Experience with Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation) and deployment pipelines.
• Experience with app containerization (e.g., Docker).
• Leadership skills and an ability to coordinate application delivery and best practices across different organizational units.
• Strong interest or a background in natural sciences and conservation.
• Strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize multiple competing demands.
• Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience are appreciated, including experience with web maps supporting different languages.

This position may be based in any country where TNC has an established entity, taking into consideration legal restrictions, such as non-national ratios and immigration processing times. For U.S. based applicants only, the starting pay range for this position is generally within the range of $80,840.00 – $128,700.00 for annual base salary and is based on location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. For all other applicants, pay ranges will be in local currency, the pay range will be based on the local labor market, and not tied to the above pay range. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment and used to determine your actual pay range. Additionally, for all applicants, actual pay will fall within a range based on a variety of factors including, for example, the candidate’s qualifications, specific skills, and experience.
