Dynamics of the Role
The role will lead the Legal, Risk and Compliance function for TransUnion Asia Pacific (“TUAPAC”) and participate in strategic business engagements and decision-making across regions to ensure compliance and alignment with required legal standards.

What You'll Bring:

  • LLB and 12+ years of experience, with at least the last 6 years of experience as a practicing attorney in a law firm or in-house position. Preferred experience includes managing a team and advising clients with regard to and negotiating complex commercial contracts in a regulated environment.
  • Executive level written and oral communication skills and advocacy experience.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and critical-thinking skills (root cause analysis, problem solving, issue spotting, and decision making).
  • Apply knowledge of key business drivers and related factors to maximize LRC Department performance.
  • Preferred experience includes financial services industry advising clients with regard to and negotiating data and technology licensing agreements in a regulated environment, and a strong regulatory compliance background.
  • Ability to influence internal/external business and regulatory issues that have an impact on the business.
  • A team player ready to work closely in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Strong work ethic with the demonstrated ability to manage and handle a significant and diverse work flow in an effective and timely manner.
  • Ability to read, interpret and advise business partners on complex documents, including laws, contracts, business documents, system documents, company policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to build and foster strong relationships with, and relate well to, peers, staff, and management of all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to build and foster relationships, and become a trusted business partner at C-Suite level through excellent interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills and recognized expertise

Impact You'll Make:

Product and Strategy fulfillment:

  • Ensuring the provisions of first-class commercial advice to the business teams in dealings with clients and suppliers.
  • Providing expert advice to the business across the core areas of consumer credit, banking, privacy and commercial.
  • Facilitating product change and development by ensuring a fit for purpose support for the PDLC (Product Development Lifecycle Process), which takes into account key regulatory and legal parameters for strategic changes in markets , products or services.
  • Ensure robust governance and prioritisation forums to identify improvements to these processes, to support efficiency and mitigation of legal risk.
     

Legal and regulatory change:

  • Ensure the development of appropriate internal measures to facilitate the sharing of key regulatory changes to business decision makers.
  • Work with internal and external partners to recommend appropriate tactics for effective engagement to raise awareness and strengthen our reputation with key policy makers and decision-makers.
  • Implement effective Horizon Scanning for upcoming policy developments and activities and maintain a public affairs schedule
  • Prepare high-quality briefing materials for external audiences and senior internal stakeholders to support the delivery of TU influencing priorities.
  • Identify opportunities and draft responses to regulatory, parliamentary, government and other consultations.
  • Assist in identifying and developing relationships with relevant external groups.
  • Active participation in a range of external fora to represent the business’ interest in policy making.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for continuous improvement with the team’s processes
  • Oversee relationships with external law firms and managing legal expenses effectively.
     

M&A and integration activity

  • Contribute to any regional M&A activity with expert advice during due diligence/disclosure processes and ultimate contracting.

Corporate Governance:

  • Support the company secretary and team on corporate governance matters, including board meetings, shareholder relations, and corporate policies.
     

Litigation and Dispute Resolution:

  • Manage and oversee litigation matters involving the organization.
  • Work closely with external counsel and represent the organization in legal proceedings as necessary.
     

Risk & Compliance:

  • Work with the APAC Head of Risk to oversee existing processes designed to manage business risks and lead efforts to re-design and improve as necessary.
  • Support implementing policies and procedures to manage operational risks.
  • Act as the primary contact for TUAPAC regulatory interactions and liaison with the Board on such matters.
  • Work closely with the TUAPAC Exec to manage risks associated with business implementations.
  • Support the implementation of the Group and TUAPAC Risk Framework, and formulate strategic action plans to minimise, manage and mitigate primary risks
  • Represent TUAPAC at the IRMC
  • Collaborate and communicate with stakeholders on risk management measures and progress.
  • Ensure risk management is properly prioritised in firm wide strategy.
  • Take a leading role in ‘Gold’ level incident management.

Leadership and Executive management engagement :

  • Play a leading role in the strategy and operational excellence of the TUAPAC LRC team.
  • Align individual team member expertise and experience with evolving business requirements.:
  • Provide day to day oversight mentoring, leadership and support for the legal team
  • General management of members of the Team, including appraisals, goal setting and monitoring. 
  • Coaching and mentoring members of the Team.
  • Manage key stakeholders through regular engagement, advocacy on behalf of the Team and championing of legal risk mitigation.
  • Overall management of TUAPAC external providers including selection, escalation and coordination with International colleagues.
  • Overall management of TUAPAC Legal budget.
This is a hybrid position and involves regular performance of job responsibilities virtually as well as in-person at an assigned TU office location for a minimum of two days a week.
