Job Summary: Independence American Insurance Company (IAIC) is seeking a Finance Manager to support the financial performance, capital strength, and disciplined growth of its insurance carrier, reporting to the Director of Financial Planning & Analysis.
The role is responsible for managing core carrier FP&A activities, including forecasting, budgeting, performance analysis, and capital interpretation, while leading a small team of analysts. It partners closely with Underwriting and Actuarial teams to translate underwriting strategies, pricing actions, actuarial assumptions, and capital outcomes into clear, executive‑ready insights. As the organization scales, the role will support the development and growth of the FP&A analyst team and help elevate the rigor, consistency, and insightfulness of carrier‑level financial analysis.
Main Responsibilities:
- Strategic Business Partnering
- Serve as a primary finance partner to Underwriting and Actuarial teams, ensuring financial and capital implications of decisions are clearly understood and translated into finance‑ready insights for leadership.
- Challenge, validate, and reconcile assumptions across Finance and Actuarial to ensure coherent view of performance.
- Translate technical underwriting and actuarial output into clear, concise financial narratives that support executive and Board‑level decision‑making.
- Planning & Forecasting
- Own the carrier-level P&L forecasting process across GAAP and Statutory bases.
- Integrate inputs from Underwriting and Actuarial into rolling forecasts and multi-scenario planning.
- Design and maintain standardized forecasting models, templates, and assumption frameworks to improve consistency, auditability, governance, and efficiency across planning cycles.
- Partner with stakeholders to streamline forecast timelines and reduce manual effort through process simplification and automation where appropriate.
- Manage, mentor, and develop FP&A resources, ensuring high‑quality analysis, clear communication, and consistent execution of planning and reporting deliverables.
- Performance Analysis
- Monitor and analyze loss ratio performance.
- Partner with Actuarial and Underwriting to identify and explain results.
- Develop repeatable analytics and dashboards to improve visibility into key carrier KPIs and performance drivers.
- Continuously improve data flow from source systems to reporting outputs to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and a single source of truth.
- Capital Modeling
- Analyze and support maintenance capital models under baseline and stress scenarios, partnering with stakeholders to ensure clarity and consistency of capital assumptions.
- Assess capital impacts of underwriting actions, growth plans, and loss experience.
- Improve capital modeling processes, documentation, and review materials to support scalability, regulatory review, and rating‑agency interactions.
- Data, Reporting & Process Improvement
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives across FP&A data, reporting, and planning processes.
- Enhance data governance, controls, and documentation to support reliable GAAP, Statutory, and capital reporting.
- Partner cross-functionally to improve data flow between actuarial models, underwriting systems, and financial forecasting outputs.
- Support automation and system enhancements that reduce manual reporting and enable faster, more insightful analysis.
Qualifications Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Actuarial Science, or a related field; MBA,
- CPA, or CFA strongly preferred.
- 7-10+ years of progressive experience in FP&A, corporate finance, or financial strategy
- Experience in complex, regulated, or analytically driven environments (e.g., financial services, ratings, capital markets, insurance, fintech)
- Strong track record of executive‑level financial analysis and communication
- Advanced proficiency in financial modeling and forecasting
Preferred
- Pet insurance, personal lines, or specialty insurance background
- Strong understanding of insurance financials and statutory capital concepts
- Experience in a high-growth or scaling environ
