The Finance and Accounting Intern will support the finance and accounting teams of a wholesale mortgage bank by assisting with daily accounting operations, financial reporting, loan-level analysis, reconciliations, and administrative finance projects. This role is designed for a student or recent graduate interested in gaining hands-on experience in mortgage banking, corporate finance, accounting, treasury, and financial operations.
The intern will work closely with accounting, finance, capital markets, servicing, and operations teams to learn how a mortgage banking company tracks loan production, manages expenses, supports month-end close, analyzes profitability, and maintains accurate financial records.
This role is a part-time, non-exempt internship within our corporate department and reports to department leadership.
Job Duties:
- Accounting Support
- Assist with accounts payable, invoice review, coding, and documentation.
- Help prepare journal entry support and account reconciliations.
- Assist with month-end close tasks, including accruals, prepaid expenses, and expense analysis.
- Support reconciliations of bank accounts, warehouse lines, escrow accounts, and other balance sheet accounts.
- Maintain organized accounting records and supporting documentation.
- Help review general ledger activity for accuracy and completeness.
- Finance and Reporting
- Assist in preparing financial reports, dashboards, and variance analyses.
- Support budget-to-actual comparisons and expense trend reporting.
- Help analyze loan production volume, revenue, gain-on-sale activity, and operating expenses.
- Assist with branch, channel, or department-level profitability reporting.
- Support cash flow tracking and liquidity reporting.
- Help prepare management reports for senior finance leadership.
- Mortgage Banking Operations Support
- Learn how wholesale mortgage banking revenue is generated, including lender-paid compensation, gain-on-sale margins, and loan sale proceeds.
- Assist with tracking funded loan volume, lock pipeline activity, and investor sale activity.
- Support analysis of loan-level profitability and production trends.
- Help reconcile loan funding, warehouse advances, investor settlements, and related accounting entries.
- Assist with projects involving mortgage servicing rights, early payoff activity, repurchases, or investor adjustments, as applicable.
- Compliance and Documentation
- Maintain confidentiality of borrower, company, and financial information.
- Assist with audit support and internal control documentation.
- Help gather documentation for regulatory, investor, or financial reporting requests.
- Support process improvement projects to increase accuracy and efficiency.
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Current enrollment in or recent completion of a degree program in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field.
- Basic understanding of accounting principles and financial statements.
- Strong Excel skills, including formulas, formatting, sorting, filtering, and basic data analysis.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to handle confidential information professionally.
- Willingness to learn mortgage banking terminology and processes.
- Coursework in financial accounting, managerial accounting, corporate finance, or data analytics preferred.
- Experience with Excel functions such as XLOOKUP, pivot tables, SUMIFS, and data validation preferred.
- Exposure to accounting software, ERP systems, loan origination systems, or business intelligence tools preferred.
- Interest in mortgage banking, real estate finance, banking, or financial services preferred.
