Job Summary
Under general supervision performs investigations and analyses of communicable and non-communicable disease incidents and outbreaks. Monitors the health of populations and identifies causes and conditions resulting in adverse health effects and proposes corrective actions. Provides guidance, support and in-depth analyses for project(s) and/or public health actions. Reports, evaluates and summarizes disease occurrences, investigations, interventions and other projects as needed. Helps other department program areas build analytic capacity by promoting use of software tools available.

Initially, this position will support the grant-funded Vaccine Safety Datalink project at Denver Health, which seeks to ethically involve its diverse patients in high-quality vaccine safety research that benefits individuals, clinicians, communities, and researchers. This position will join a synergistic team of 6 other Denver Health staff and over 150 individuals across 13 health systems and the CDC to pull data and produce rigorous datasets for use in vaccination safety, coverage, and effectiveness studies. With one year, this position will be given advancement opportunities within the Center for Health Systems Research to diversify their work and assist with data collection and analyses on a range of grant-funded community and individual health projects.
Essential Functions:

  • Delivers project guidance and analytic services for a variety of public health conditions of interest (e.g., communicable diseases, chronic diseases, health behaviors and risk factors). Works with information technology tools to generate sustainable solutions for program areas
    • Supports and/or guides investigations and evaluates, quantifies, and interprets information relative to disease epidemiology.
    • Utilizes epidemiology principles, investigative techniques, and analyses of health behaviors, risks, conditions and diseases.
    • Conducts quantitative and qualitative investigations to identify risk factors, disease occurrence rates, and where necessary implements control measures.
    • Develops actions plans to address trends and issues.
    • Works with program managers, program directors, and other members of the Epidemiology/Surveillance team to perform analyses and develop responses to public health events and diseases.
    • Collates data from multiple data sources to produce reports on public health events, response measures, health conditions, and health policy development.
    • Uses computer programs and technology to achieve program goals through automation of business objectives and integration of new data to support program needs.
    • Prepares materials for presentation in designated software (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, SAS, and mapping visualizations).
    • Participates in department and program team meetings as scheduled.
    • Enables the use of GIS tools to support public health analysis and messaging.
    • Supports staff in analyzing data to produce specific health messages and summaries.

  • Plays lead role in projects for developing and improving data systems in the Business Intelligence (BI) software environment.
    • Works with technology specialists to design and build monitoring and reporting solutions.
    • Coordinates efforts to assess the inclusion of new data sources through discovery, documentation, and early analysis.
    • Participates in designing surveillance systems for diseases having important public health implications.
    • Serves as a primary contact for establishing governance and policy rules for incorporating new data into the data warehouse serving local and state jurisdictional needs.
    • Assists in data collection, database development, and mapping design work.
    • Coordinates data and information development needs for research projects as required.
    • Supports program areas in defining monitoring tools (e.g., dashboards) for program operations.
    • Maintains relationships with data curators to assure data uses are consistent with governance agreements and mutually defined goals..

  • Provides technical assistance to the health department, clinicians, other health professionals, community-based organizations, and/or health departments, both locally and nationally. (25%)

Education:

  • Master's Degree in epidemiology, public health, environmental health, nursing, or related field Required

Work Experience:

  • 1-3 years Two years of professional experience in the investigation and/or prevention of communicable or non-communicable diseases. Required or
  • an equivalent combination of education and experience. Required

Licenses:

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Proficiency in SAS, SQL, and/or GIS applications highly desirable.
    • Proficiency in MS Office applications.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Creative problem solving abilities.
    • Demonstrated ability as a self-starter who can prioritize and conduct multiple activities.
    • The typical candidate will have demonstrated skill as an experienced analyst with a working knowledge of statistical methods.
