Department:

WDTech - R&D

We are Walker & Dunlop.  We are one of the largest providers of capital to the commercial real estate industry, enabling real estate owners and operators to bring their visions of communities — where people live, work, shop, and play — to life. We are committed to creating meaningful social, environmental, and economic change in our communities.

Department Overview

WDTech is W&D’s in-house technology team – a group of highly skilled technology professionals, all of whom are leading experts in real estate data, data science, and technology.

WDTech Engineering builds solutions that impact not only our products but also the people and processes across our organization. A commitment to innovation and a passion for disrupting the old-fashioned real estate industry are our highest priorities.

The Impact You Will Have

As an Engineering Manager, you will lead the technical delivery of software solutions from concept through production. You will own the planning, design, and execution of technical initiatives while remaining hands-on as a senior individual contributor.

Partnering closely with a Product Manager, you will translate product vision into clear technical requirements, provide accurate estimates, guide agile execution, and continuously improve engineering practices. You will also foster a collaborative, high-performing team culture focused on quality, scalability, and business impact.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead and support a cross-functional team of Frontend, Backend/API, and Quality Assurance engineers to achieve team objectives and milestones

  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle, from ideation and planning through development, testing, customer feedback, and iteration

  • Collaborate with Product Managers to break down features into technical requirements and delivery plans

  • Provide architectural and design direction, manage technical debt, and promote engineering best practices

  • Proactively identify and implement improvements across the full technology stack

  • Build and maintain backend systems using Python, Airflow, PostgreSQL, and Kafka

  • Partner with Product Owners, Data Engineers, and Data Scientists to expose and integrate data within web applications

  • Collaborate with other Engineering Managers on cross-team initiatives such as CI/CD, testing, monitoring, and front-end logging

  • Lead agile ceremonies and support effective team execution

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education and Experience

  • 6+ years of professional software development experience, including 2+ years in an engineering leadership role

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

  • Experience designing and building public APIs using OpenAPI specifications and service-level contracts

  • Experience working with mapping and location-based libraries (e.g., Mapbox)

  • Proven experience coaching, mentoring, and developing engineers

  • Experience with Amazon Web Services, event-driven architectures, and client-facing data applications

  • Experience in the real estate domain is a plus

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong proficiency in modern web application architecture, including frontend, backend, and API design

  • Advanced expertise in Python (3.5+) and experience guiding teams working within a Python-based stack

  • Deep understanding of testing strategies across the software lifecycle, from unit to end-to-end testing

  • Ability to leverage AI tooling for writing technical design documents, software development and testing

  • Solid grasp of Agile principles, iterative delivery, and continuous feedback loops

  • Strong architectural judgment, with the ability to balance scalability, maintainability, and technical debt

  • Sound decision-making skills and comfort navigating ambiguity

  • Ability to show ownership of your work, take on challenges and acknowledge growth opportunities, and demonstrate patience when learning new processes

  • Courtesy, respect, and thoughtfulness in teaming with colleagues and other stakeholders

This position has an estimated base salary of $190,000 - $215,000 plus discretionary bonus. An employment offer is based on the applicant’s relevant work experience, applicable knowledge, skills, abilities, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
