Join a team of curious, creative people who care deeply about what they build. We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to help grow and support our engineering team. At ReadMe, we have a strong, people-first engineering culture, and we’re excited to find someone who will help us nurture it as we scale. If you’re passionate about developer tools, empathetic leadership, and working cross-functionally to build amazing products, you’ll feel right at home here.

We're a small team of humans (and one owl) working together to shape the developer landscape through documentation! That’s where you come in.

🦉 Who we are

ReadMe helps companies build beautiful, personalized, and interactive developer hubs. If you’ve ever visited the developer docs for Apple or Notion, you’ve used ReadMe! We love what we do because it’s so much more than just docs. We’re providing tools for teams to create and manage beautiful documentation with ease. You can read more about what it’s like to work at ReadMe on our careers page.

We've written on our blog in the past about how we interview, and feel free to browse our other blog posts as well if it strikes your fancy!

✅ What you'll do here
  • You’ll maintain and expand the culture of not just the engineering team, but the company in general. From inside jokes to engineering practices, you’ll be a huge influence in how the company works.

  • Have a large say in the roadmap, both from a resourcing perspective (what the engineering team has bandwidth for) and from a product perspective (what you think we should be working on).

  • Directly manage and support a team of engineers, enabling them to do their best work.

  • Mentor engineers to make sure they’re able to be the best versions of themselves at ReadMe.

  • Write code! All our managers stay hands-on with the product.

  • Collaborate closely with Product, Sales, Marketing, and Customer Experience to build a seamless user journey.

💙 You'll love this job if you are...
  • Are excited to help build a developer experience that you’d want to use!

  • Have experience as a technical manager with a focus on growth and mentorship.

  • You’re looking to be part of a company that cares about its employees, and who rewards you for caring about your team

  • Believe that companies and the products they produced are deeply intertwined, and excited to invest time and energy into both

  • You can bring a bit of necessary structure and process, but also believe people do their best work if trusted and supported

  • Sometimes want the opportunity to talk to and work directly with customers

  • You want to build something millions of developers use and love

  • You’re excited to do great work with people you like, while having a bit of fun in the process

🌱 How you'll grow within one month
  • Get to know the team, product, and codebase.

  • Start thinking through what success looks like over the next year.

  • Build relationships across Product, Sales, Marketing, and Customer Experience.

🪴 Within a few months, you'll...
  • Become involved in product planning and engineering resourcing

  • Match team members with projects that play to their strengths.

  • Help guide technical decisions and outline team goals.

🌳 Within your first year, you'll...
  • Deliver thoughtful annual reviews and development plans.

  • Support promotions and career growth across the team.

  • Foster a team culture that’s collaborative, curious, and aligned with ReadMe’s mission.

🛣️ What’s the hiring process like
  1. We can’t wait to read your resume and (hopefully personality-filled) cover letter! Let us know what excites you about the intersection of visual design and engineering, and help us get to know you better!

  2. If we think we might be a good fit for you, we’ll set up a 30 minute phone chat with Greg, our CEO and Founder! He’ll tell you more about the role, and get a chance to hear about your experiences.

  3. Next will be a second 45 minute phone interview with one of our current Engineering Managers, where we’ll dive a bit more into your background.

  4. Then we’ll invite you to an "onsite" interview conducted over Zoom! These usually take 3.5 to 5 hours including an hour break in between. We are able to be flexible with the schedule and split it up over two days if that works best for you! We start with a 15-minute get-to-know-you so you can meet the people you’ll be working with, and then have you talk with people one-on-one later on.

  5. We’ll let you know how things went within a week! If it still seems like a good fit all around, we’ll extend you an offer! If not, we will update you to let you know so you aren’t left hanging.

✨ Our benefits include…
  • Unlimited PTO with a three-week minimum. 🏝

  • Fully covered medical, dental, and vision insurance for you, and your dependents. 🩺

  • A One Medical membership. 🧑‍⚕️

  • A wellness stipend for therapy of up to $350 per month for up to 6 months. 😌

  • A wellness stipend of up to $150 per month. 🏋️

  • One-to-one donation matching of up to $1,000 per year. 💸

  • Twelve weeks of paid parental leave after the birth or adoption of a child. 🐣

  • Work from home office stipend of $500. 🖥️

  • Three offsite retreats per year to get together with coworkers and plan for the quarter ahead. ✈️

  • Take a look at our handbook for more information on our benefits! 📘

At ReadMe, we’re committed to cultivating a diverse and inclusive workplace. We welcome people of all backgrounds, experiences, abilities, and perspectives. We are an equal opportunity employer and a pleasant and supportive place to work. We'd love to have you come join us here! ReadMe is open to hiring folks fully remote in the US, hybrid, or in-person at our San Francisco or NYC offices.
