About Uptime Crew

At Uptime Crew the work of an Engineering Manager (EM) focuses primarily on coaching and mentoring. The impact of our EMs is always future-facing. The work we do contributes to/is applied across all kinds of industry and company size. Our EMs have not only the technical expertise to take on and provide technical leadership to our Consultants’ , but also manage multiple teams of Consultants in Training.

As an EM you manage project goals, contribute to each Project’s product strategy and help develop the future consultants in your teams. Our EMs focus on enabling the success of our Consultants in Training. This involves creating an environment where individuals can do their best work, grow to new heights, and collaborate in a transparent and rewarding way that will enable their future work and contribute to our partners’ goals.

Consultant teams work across multiple Capstone Projects from a variety of technical Programs that seek to elevate, solidify and codify their knowledge of Full Stack Engineering, Data Engineering, Cloud DevOps, CyberSecurity; the variety and scope is growing every day.

Our exceptional Consultants in Training are just getting started on their journeys -- and as a Generalist, you guide the way.

In this role, you will set the direction for any number of Capstone Projects staffed with our Consultants in Training. The teams build to an Enterprise Scale application as possible, taking into account their respective Program and/or Client goals and objectives. Your work will impact their Industry placement and marketability.

You will not be contributing to the code bases, but if needed you will be comfortable diving into the tech stack, the integration patterns, to provide technical feedback to your team members to help with their growth, and to increase their understanding of the tech stack and Program goals.

Qualifications:

- BS/MS in Computer Science or a related technical field

- 5+ years of professional technical experience developing and operating software in one of the following languages: Java, Python, Javascript, DevSecOps.

- 3+ years of experience managing multi-functional full-stack teams. Overseeing technical mentorship, performance feedback, and guidance to the team.

- Attention to detail and a strong passion for quality – experience architecting, designing, and developing customer-facing software.

- Experience thriving in a dynamic environment where goals and requirements may be changing constantly

- Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with multi-functional teams about various topics such as product requirements, user experience, system architecture, APIs, and project schedules

- A deep understanding of software development lifecycle, methodologies, and best practices.

- Familiarity with Agile Software Development Life cycle best practices.

- Strong architecture and system design sense – experience developing frameworks and APIs

- A demonstrable commitment to continuous self-improvement - a leader by example.

People Management (EM)

- Lead and coach multiple teams of software engineers; create clarity, communicate teams’ vision, strategy and progress to peers, Clients, and Senior Leaders.

- Enable our Consultants to represent our and Client company cultures of transparency, trust, collaboration, and empowerment

- Provide expert guidance, hands-on assistance, best practices, and training, establishes team culture with emphasis on customer centricity, quality, and engineering agility, removing barriers, and enabling the teams to be productive.

- Mentor Consultants in training to improve technical proficiencies and maintain the highest engineering standards

- Effectively lead planning and execution processes, creating robust engineering plans and prioritizing work across teams. Make timely decisions to meet quality, security, reliability, and shipping goals.

- Manage team schedules, priorities, regular work assignments and monitor overall performance.

- Provide strategic and operational oversight to Capstone Projects

- Translate Capstone Project requirements into a strategy for systems solutions, derive data?driven insights*, building experiences that empower our Consultants to showcase more of their talent. Define well thought out design patterns and code with an emphasis on quality, simplicity, and maintainability, and performance that others can follow to ensure proper application architecture.

- Lead the Consultants in Training in the ideation and technical development of innovative enterprise software and Capstone projects.

- Champion agile and lean principles promoting ownership and alignment to ours and Client goals.

- Drive awareness and adoption of tools that can effectively contribute to key tooling initiatives.

- Responsible for understanding, recommending, and adapting to new technologies, tools, methods, and processes.

- Lead the continuous improvement of engineering and quality practices.

- Develop an engineering culture that fosters creativity, collaboration and a continuous learning/growth mindset.

- Perform HR responsibilities as the first-line manager of individuals.

- Work across business resource groups to ensure the long-term integrity of business-critical tools with the Uptime Crew platform*.

- Establish and promote a metrics based organizational mindset, develop key operational metrics and push for continuous improvement.

- Interface with senior management to report on project and program milestones and present project needs and technical knowledge.

- Work with business/product owners to develop and deliver on new services to introduce new products and bundles

- Take on or start a range of initiatives and special projects as needed

Capstone Projects. (PM)

As the lead for your teams’ Capstone Projects your role will include:

Project Definition & Value

- Responsible for determining project strategy, vision, and needs, understanding “market demands” and technical trends, problem solving and proposing solutions.

- Translate inputs and program/client “needs” into detailed product requirements documents and user stories for engineering teams to execute

- Balance “business” and technical objectives and manifest these as clear, stable priorities for the team.

- Manage product planning through day to day collaboration and decision making with a cross-functional team including engineers.

- Define non-functional requirements including performance, scalability, resilience, usability, security, and business continuity.

- Model for Consultants, cross functional work and collaboration with members of product teams, legal teams, data & analytics teams, customer service teams, localization teams and more, to identify requirements for new features

Stretch Goals

- Define product health and performance metrics

- Create dashboard/reporting requirements and KPIs to measure product performance

- Identifies opportunities to improve feature performance and overall product health using data.

- Model features “success” post deployment and feed “insights” back to the team.

Communication and Collaboration

- Model for Consultants, interactions with business stakeholders to understand business problems

- Present/Craft options/recommendations clearly and persuasively to support “business stakeholder decisions”

- Work with engineering teams to understand, prioritize and document technical and non-functional features.

Product Planning & Delivery

- Drives and delivers key valuable features based on project roadmaps.

- Responsible for prioritization of features

- Identifies and documents technical tradeoffs as well as dependencies and constraints

- Performs validation of features against stated “goals”; facilitates “user review/acceptance testing”

- Manages execution and eliminates blocking issues during development

- Model and manage work with cross-functional teams on feature sizing and delivery planning

- Effective communications of product delivery milestones and progress

- Maintain all necessary JIRA tasks, boards and detailed documentation across teams, as well as all necessary communication to internal stakeholders

As an EM you will also be expected to implement the following:

- Recruitment and Delivery Pipeline

- Conduct in-depth evaluations and assess the potential of our technical candidates throughout the training programs.

- Facilitate the end to end delivery process; including evaluation, interview prep and off-boarding for our Consultants.

- Be a trusted advisor for the Recruitment and Business Delivery units. You will work closely together with recruitment coordinators and other team members to make sure we attract and hire the best talent

- Recommend and drive improvements to scale our overall recruiting practice.

- Recommend and drive improvements to scale our overall delivery practice

- Ensure that the delivery process holds a high validity and that Consultants are being prepared in a quality driven way.

- Package and present performance and quality of delivery pipelines for main key partners.

- Define, design, and implement technical delivery programs and drive delivery strategy recommendations for a variety of Programs.

- Be a thought partner with leaders to establish plans, define strategies, and deliver solutions that redefine the way we deliver our Consultant Talent.

- Innovatively utilize tools such as issue tracking systems etc. for workflow tracking, communication and management of the delivery pipeline.

- Drive facilitation of continuous improvement via measurement tools, scorecards, and delivery analytics

- Promote compliance with EEO/Diversity policies

Client Partnerships

- Collaborate with business delivery teams to share competitive intelligence and placement of technical talent.

- Collaborate with clients and business delivery units to develop a strong understanding of client culture, business strategy and talent profiles to deliver on the hiring needs of the clients and delivery needs of the business.

- Participate in special projects/task forces as assigned
