Actionstep is a pioneer in the development and sale of software-as-a-service (SaaS) products, specializing in the delivery of Legal Practice Management software.  We are a fast growing, dynamic business with a global customer base of more than 30,000 and a team of over 300 in the USA, Australia, UK, Canada, New Zealand and LATAM.

The Actionstep Engineering team contributes to developing, maintaining, and running Actionstep through the delivery of industry leading technology, operations, and analysis. Actionstep Engineering consists of squads of cross-discipline software engineers, analysts and product experts who work collaboratively to enhance Actionstep software for our customers.

How we build

Every team at Actionstep builds with AI as part of the development lifecycle. Engineers and product managers decide what gets built, write the specs, and review and own what ships, while AI agents do much of the building and testing. We treat the harness, i.e. the tooling, context and review checkpoints our teams build with, as a product in its own right. We measure delivery on one scoreboard that reads throughput beside quality, so speed never gets counted without quality next to it.

Our platform runs on TypeScript services, React micro-frontends and a shared design system, on AWS across multiple regions.

Our Product Development teams work across North America, the UK and Asia-Pacific. Each team works within one time-zone band, so its members share a working day. This role leads teams in both North America and Asia-Pacific.

Engineering Director – AI Products

AI Products owns the AI features built into our products along with the AI, data and workflow capabilities that the power our platform, such as agents, open APIs and MCP, search, analytics and workflow automation.

You lead several teams through their engineering managers, and work alongside a product lead and product managers for each area.

Location -- Denver, Colorado (hybrid).

In this role, you will:

  • Lead through managers -- you set direction, standards and priorities for a group of teams, and grow the managers who run them.
  • Ship AI to production -- you work with product to turn the AI roadmap into features firms use every day, with permissions, privacy and audit built in.
  • Build shared platform capabilities -- you make sure agents, APIs, search, data and workflow work reliably for every Actionstep product.
  • Run AI responsibly and efficiently -- you build evaluation, observability and cost discipline into how AI features are designed and run.
  • Raise the bar on how we build -- you bring every team in the group onto our AI development lifecycle and make delivery predictable.
  • Lead across time zones -- you run a group split between North America and Asia-Pacific, which means some early or late calls.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Undertaking any other reasonable duties as required

Requirements

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Director-level leadership -- you have led multiple teams through engineering managers.
  • AI in production -- you have shipped AI or agent features in a production SaaS product, including the evaluation, permissions, observability and cost management that come with them.
  • Led AI PDLC adoption -- you have moved an engineering org to AI-driven development and can show what changed, with data. You use AI coding tools yourself and have led a team that builds with them.
  • Platform and API experience -- you have built services and APIs that other teams and outside developers depend on.
  • Trust and privacy -- you have built software that handles confidential or regulated data.
  • Hands-on AI experience -- you use AI coding tools yourself and have led teams that build with them.
  • Distributed team leadership -- you have led teams across distant time zones.

Desirable:

Experience with search, data platforms or workflow engines, or with software for legal or other professional services, is a plus.

Leadership qualities:

  • Leads through managers and tech leads, and raises the hiring bar.
  • Makes sound calls with incomplete information, and changes course when the data says so.
  • Explains complex technical trade-offs simply to executives and non-technical colleagues.
  • Coaches and grows engineers and engineering managers.
  • Builds trust across teams, functions and time zones.
