How we build

Every team at Actionstep builds with AI as part of the development lifecycle. Engineers and product managers decide what gets built, write the specs, and review and own what ships, while AI agents do much of the building and testing. We treat the harness, i.e. the tooling, context and review checkpoints our teams build with, as a product in its own right. We measure delivery on one scoreboard that reads throughput beside quality, so speed never gets counted without quality next to it.

Our platform runs on TypeScript services, React micro-frontends and a shared design system, on AWS across multiple regions.

Our Product Development teams work across North America, the UK and Asia-Pacific. Each team works within one time-zone band, so its members share a working day.

Engineering Director -- Accounting Platform

Actionstep is building the next generation of its platform for law firms, with AI built in from the start. The work is greenfield, and it sits at the core of how firms run their business, so accuracy, auditability and trust matter as much as speed. We build with AI-driven software development, i.e. AI writes most of the code, and team members decide what gets built, judge whether the result is right, and improve the system that builds it.

This is a hands-on leadership role. You lead a new and growing team of engineers, designers, QA and accounting specialists, and you act as its engineering manager as you build it out.

Location -- Denver, Colorado (hybrid).

In this role, you will:

  • Own delivery -- you own the plan, keep it honest, and explain progress, trade-offs and risk plainly to the executive team.
  • Set the technical direction -- you work with the tech lead and senior engineers on the decisions that are expensive to reverse, including how AI agents act safely on financial data.
  • Run an AI-first build -- you lead the spec-driven way of working, measure it, and make it faster as we learn.
  • Hire and grow the team -- you build the team and set the standards it works to.
  • Work across teams -- you agree scope and dates with the teams the platform depends on, such as permissions, approvals and workflow.

Other Responsibilities:

Undertaking any other reasonable duties as required

Requirements

Experience & Qualifications:

  • Financial systems experience -- you have led engineering for accounting, billing, payments or other systems where the numbers have to be right, including regulated or audited money flows.
  • Greenfield delivery -- you have taken a new platform from first commit to paying customers, and kept the plan honest along the way.
  • SaaS experience -- you have built and run multi-tenant SaaS products.
  • Led AI PDLC adoption -- you have moved an engineering org to AI-driven development and can show what changed, with data. You use AI coding tools yourself and have led a team that builds with them.
  • Distributed team leadership -- you have led teams across time zones, including contractors.
  • Clear executive communication -- you can explain trade-offs and delivery risk plainly to senior executives.

Desirable:

  • Experience with legal, trust or professional-services accounting software is a strong plus.
  • Leadership qualities:
    • Leads through managers and tech leads, and raises the hiring bar.
    • Makes sound calls with incomplete information, and changes course when the data says so.
    • Explains complex technical trade-offs simply to executives and non-technical colleagues.
    • Coaches and grows engineers and engineering managers.
    • Builds trust across teams, functions and time zones.
    • Holds a high bar for quality and owns outcomes, not just activity.
