Job Summary
We are recruiting a Documentation Engineer to organize, improve, and own our technical documentation. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, fast worker, and excited about growing a company from the ground up. The role will report to our Sr. Director of Developer Relations. We are open to full time U.S. based candidates to work as a dedicated full-time employee. Most of our staff reside in the Mountain or Pacific time zone but we are open to any U.S. location.
The Documentation Engineer will own our technical documentation efforts including establishing documentation strategy, evaluating documentation satisfaction, determining documentation update cadence, hands-on writing of technical documentation, and improving the overall docs developer experience. This growing company needs a full-time, roll-up-your-sleeves pro with a diverse background scaling an organization through multiple stages (i.e. seven-figure, eight-figure, and nine-figure revenue). We are growing rapidly and you will have a direct hand in creating and improving technical documentation processes.
Experience
We are looking for someone that has done this before for this critical newly created role.
Top 3 things you have done successfully:
- written deeply technical docs and owned documentation strategy and developer experience for developer tooling products
- been a product expert for a technical product
- worked as a developer with experience writing and reviewing code
Other things in your toolbox:
- been in hyper growth recurring revenue tech startup companies;
- able to roll up your sleeves and get things done in early days while also seeing the bigger picture; and
- a vision of what the organization needs 18-24 months out and can execute the plan to get there
Responsibilities
Understand our product
- Within 2-3 months, understand FusionAuth’s capabilities. Within the first year, be a product expert.
- Learn the product by writing, building, running, or extending example apps that integrate with the product to verify functionality within the first six months.
- Complete the basic product training course within the first month and the advanced training course within six months.
Own technical documentation
- Write documentation, such as guides or tutorials, for our users of all levels, from beginner to expert. You will write 1-3 technical pieces of documentation a month.
- Determine areas where we need to add missing docs or improve documentation quality. Within the first 3 months, you’ll determine a list of at least 5 such areas and a strategy to work on them.
- Within 2 weeks you’ll be reviewing documentation PRs from other team members and giving them feedback on how to improve the docs and whether they make sense from a developer perspective.
- Determine refresh cadence of existing documentation. We have an existing set of documentation that needs to be reviewed and revised. Within the first 6 months, you’ll have a plan for determining which documentation needs to be reviewed; after that you’ll work down that backlog.
- Work with the DevRel, Engineering, Support, and Solution Engineering teams and community contributions to fix documentation inaccuracies. This will include reviewing Zendesk tickets and Slack conversations.
- Review documentation pull requests provided by other teams for accuracy and readability.
Improve the documentation experience of the end user
- Improve the discoverability of our documentation for new users. Within the first 9 months you’ll evaluate our current navigation structure in a data driven fashion and propose a strategy and roadmap to revise the Information Architecture of the docs.
- Within the first year, improve on-site document search and implement an MCP server and additional AI tooling to help users find the answers they need.
- Ensure a consistent documentation experience by following and improving our documentation writing styleguide, including writing rules for AI and automated tools.
Maintain Astro doc build system
- Maintain our Astro docs system, creating new components or making bug fixes to existing components as needed to meet documentation goals as outlined above.
- Update and maintain automated docs solutions such as scripts that verify JSON formatting or API correctness.
- Evaluate the current platform’s effectiveness and scalability and propose a strategy and roadmap for improvement or migration of the docs toolchain.
Qualifications
- Demonstrable experience in owning technical documentation for a developer tool
- 8+ years of software development or related technical experience and 3+ years of documentation related experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; excel at working cross-functionally and collaboratively across several departments
- Exceptional project management and planning skills
- A strong sense of urgency and ownership over projects and deliverables
- Proficiency in markdown and git
- Experience with authentication (OIDC, OAuth, SAML) and/or React (we use Astro) strongly preferred
Compensation
