POSITION OVERVIEW
The Director of Revenue Accounting is a senior technical leader who owns end-to-end revenue recognition for Avid globally. This individual serves as the company’s primary subject matter expert on ASC 606 and GAAP revenue accounting, partners closely with Sales, Deal Desk, Legal, and FP&A to evaluate complex arrangements, and ensures that Avid’s revenue reporting meets the highest standards of accuracy, compliance, and transparency.
This role demands a rare combination of deep technical accounting expertise, operational discipline in managing the close process, executive communication skills, and the ability to develop and inspire a high-performing team. The Director will be a visible, trusted advisor across the organization—from individual contributors to the CFO and Audit Committee.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Technical Revenue Recognition Leadership
- Serve as Avid’s primary technical authority on ASC 606 (Revenue from Contracts with Customers) and maintain working fluency in legacy ASC 605 for transition-period comparatives and contract modifications.
- Author and maintain technical accounting position papers, white papers, and contract review memos that document the company’s application of GAAP to complex arrangements.
- Evaluate new and non-standard customer contracts, identifying performance obligations, variable consideration, SSP allocations, license vs. service distinctions, and principal/agent considerations.
- Monitor FASB ASU updates, SEC staff guidance (e.g., SAB 104, Topic 13), and emerging practice to proactively assess impact on Avid’s revenue model.
- Lead technical accounting discussions with external auditors, ensuring positions are defensible, documented, and consistently applied.
2. Revenue Close & Reporting
- Own the monthly and quarterly revenue close process end-to-end—from journal entry review to final flux analysis—ensuring timely, accurate completion within close deadlines.
- Oversee the integrity of transaction data and configurations within RevPro (the company’s revenue management system), ensuring proper allocation and recognition schedules across all contract types.
- Prepare and review revenue-related disclosures for SEC filings (10-K, 10-Q), including disaggregation of revenue, contract balances (deferred revenue, unbilled AR), remaining performance obligations (RPO), and significant judgments.
- Develop and maintain robust month-end analytical review procedures that quickly surface anomalies for investigation.
3. Deal Desk & Commercial Partnership
- Act as a standing resource for Deal Desk and Sales during contract negotiation, providing real-time guidance on how proposed terms (e.g., cancellation rights, acceptance clauses, bundled elements, discounts) affect revenue recognition.
- Educate Sales, Customer Success, and Legal teams on ASC 606 principles in clear, non-technical language—building a compliance culture without slowing deal velocity.
- Maintain a repository of pre-approved contract language and term structures that simplify deal review for recurring transaction types.
4. Internal Controls & SOX Compliance
- Own the design, documentation, and operating effectiveness of key revenue-related internal controls under SOX, including controls over contract review, system configuration, and journal entry.
- Coordinate with internal audit and external auditors on revenue controls testing, walkthroughs, and remediation of any deficiencies.
- Ensure that the revenue accounting team’s processes are audit-ready at all times.
5. Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Revenue Managers and Revenue Accountants, setting clear performance expectations and fostering a culture of precision, learning, and accountability.
- Build scalable processes and desk procedures that reduce key-person dependency and support team growth.
- Partner with Finance leadership on hiring, succession planning, and organizational design for the revenue function.
6. Systems, Process, & Special Projects
- Serve as the finance lead and subject matter expert on RevPro enhancements, system upgrades, and integrations with ERP (e.g., NetSuite, SAP) and CPQ tools.
- Lead or contribute to revenue workstreams in M&A due diligence and acquisition integration, including carve-out accounting and purchase price allocation for deferred revenue.
- Drive continuous process improvement across the revenue cycle to enhance efficiency, controls, and scalability.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; CPA license required.
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including a meaningful mix of public accounting (Big 4 or regional firm) and industry roles at publicly traded companies.
- Deep, hands-on expertise in ASC 606 including multi-element / multiple performance obligation arrangements, SSP estimation, variable consideration, licensing, and SaaS/subscription models.
- Familiarity with ASC 605 for legacy contract analysis and comparative period reporting.
- Demonstrated experience authoring technical accounting memos and presenting positions to external auditors.
- Experience managing a revenue accounting close process at a publicly traded company, including SEC disclosure preparation.
- SOX controls experience—design, documentation, and operating effectiveness testing.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; ability to distill complex GAAP issues for non-accountant audiences including Sales, Legal, and C-suite.
- Strong people leadership skills with a track record of developing high-performing teams.
Preferred
- Experience with RevPro, Zuora Revenue, or a comparable revenue management system.
- Background in software, SaaS, media technology, or other multi-element subscription / license businesses.
- M&A and integration experience, including deferred revenue step-down and purchase accounting.
- Familiarity with IFRS 15 for international entity reporting.
- Experience presenting to Audit Committees or CFOs on revenue accounting matters.
