The Director of Principal Engineering for Advanced Technology and Innovation leads a global technical team developing next-generation standards, services and capabilities in high-density compute, smart mobility, and software/AI systems. This role defines technical vision, shapes business strategies, and drives innovation, ensuring alignment with customer needs and industry trends while representing UL Solutions in emerging technologies.

For US based candidates: We understand compensation is an important factor as you consider the next step in your career. The estimated salary range for this position is $187,000 to $250,000 and is based on multiple factors, including job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, as well as other factors. This position is eligible for annual bonus compensation with a target payout of 30% of the base salary and long term incentive plan with a target payout of 30% of the base salary. This position also provides health benefits such as medical, dental and vision; wellness benefits such as mental and financial health; and retirement savings (401K) commensurate with the standard rewards offered in each individual location or country. We also provide full-time employees with paid time off including vacation (20 days), holiday including floating holidays (12 days) and sick time off (72 hours).

This role defines technical vision, shapes business strategies, and drives innovation, ensuring alignment with customer needs and industry trends while representing UL Solutions in emerging technologies.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Build and lead high-performing teams of technical experts across diverse technologies and product categories, including high-density compute systems, smart mobility platforms, and software- and AI-driven solutions.
- Responsible for developing and executing standards development roadmaps and service innovation strategies to ensure cross-domain interoperability and alignment with business growth objectives.
- Exhibits strong customer-centricity and a proactive approach to understanding client needs and innovation trajectories, to support relevance and vitality of our portfolio.
- Identifies emerging technologies and anticipates industry trends, assessing their applicability to our safety mission and enhancing relevance through standards development, new service creation, and thought leadership initiatives.
- Demonstrates big-picture ownership and understands strategic initiatives, translating them into actionable workstreams and measurable goals for teams.
- Represents UL Solutions in external engagements, including client site visits, participation in industry consortia, academia, and technical forums; advocates for UL's contribution to safe, reliable, and standards-compliant innovation across ecosystems.
- Acts as a trusted advisor both internally and externally by providing technical oversight, ensuring alignment with global market requirements, and consistently delivering results with disciplined execution.
- Leads organizational change through diverse teams, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Possesses outstanding leadership qualities, innovative problem-solving abilities, excellent communication skills, and adeptness in stakeholder management within complex, ambiguous environments.
- Adheres to the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and all physical and digital security practices.
- Performs additional responsibilities as assigned, including cross-functional collaboration to support systems-level initiatives and efforts toward global technical leadership.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree or diploma from an accredited university through a formal program of study in Engineering or relevant Engineering Discipline (such as Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Technology or Data Science but not limited to these disciplines only).
- Twelve years of directly related work experience
- A strategic leader with a proven track record in building and leading high-performing teams of technical experts across diverse technologies and product categories, including high-density compute systems, smart mobility platforms, and software- and AI-driven solutions.
- The preferred candidate will possess comprehensive expertise in several areas, including but not limited to artificial intelligence technologies, data governance, ethical frameworks, high-density computing systems, smart mobility solutions such as autonomous and robotics-enabled platforms, and advanced manufacturing technologies like digital twins and connected products.
- Five years in a leadership position within a product or technology services organization is desirable. Demonstrated experience in driving innovation from concept through to commercialization is considered an asset. Preferred to have active participation in other related activities such as active participation in standards committees, regulatory or industry committees.
