General Description: 

The HRL Materials and Microsystems Laboratory (MML) is seeking an experienced forward-thinking leader to direct its Precision Sensing Division.  This division brings together state of the art MEMS technologies and chip-scale atomic sensors to produce scalable precision sensing solutions.  HRL’s technologies serve our partners, General Motors and The Boeing Company, as well as numerous government agencies and commercial partners in the aerospace, automotive, and national security sectors.    


The ideal match for this position is a strategic and hands-on innovator with a deep understanding of technology maturation and productization – someone who excels at connecting advanced research with customer needs and who has a passion for realizing the potential of world class ideas.  


Supervisory Responsibilities:

Lead and manage a variety of technical teams in the Quantum Optics/Sensing and MEMs space. Ensuring excellence and professional growth.


Essential Duties:

Strategic Leadership:

You will lead the strategic planning, execution, and customer transition of precision sensing solutions.  Guide technical strategy through frequent engagement with LLC platform owner and technology development teams, government and industrial customers, while also maintaining strong market knowledge to inform strategic direction.  Use strategy to manage department activities and investments, business opportunities, capital resources, and staffing.

Project and Team Execution:

Oversee performance on division led projects, and ensure effective execution of projects to exceed customer expectations.  Guide project and line managers to prioritize staffing and equipment resources, support supplier management, and communicate needs and expectations for internal support services. Foster a collaborative and high-performance culture , supporting career development for all levels, and professional growth for scientists, engineers, and mangers. 

Business Development:

Manage and drive new business development activities ranging from customer identification and communication to developing new program and product opportunities.  Oversee rigorous proposal strategy and execution.

Commercialization and Intellectual Property:  Develop commercialization strategies for individual technologies, and make recommendations and analyses for business development and partnership opportunities. Develop and implement and IP strategy to support productization and value extraction.  


Required Skills:

>7 yrs experience leading applied R&D programs in industry, or government 

>7  yrs experience leading and managing a scientific or technology development research group with responsibilities including strategic planning and vision, recruiting, staffing allocations, and guiding professional growth  

Strong strategic planning experience including market analysis, road mapping, and investment prioritization

Leadership experience in managing technical teams, including recruiting, mentoring, and organization development 

Proven success in transitioning technologies from research to program and/or product development organizations

R&D proposal and contracting experience with federal agencies

Preferred: Technical depth and breadth in sensing technologies


Required Education:

PhD in engineering, physics, or related technology field. Strong candidates with a MS and significant experience will also be considered


Special Requirements:

U.S. citizenship is required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance


Compensation:

The base salary range for this full-time position is $204,665 - $262,243 + bonus + benefits.

Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
